Computer shuts down randomly and power button doesn't work

My computer shuts down randomly, after which the power button doesn't work. In order for me to turn it back on, I have to turn off the PSU and then back on. Then the button works. Any ideas why it would do this?

I assumed there might be a short, causing a button press, but why would the button require a PSU reset to work again? Is there some safety feature that prevents the button from working if it is pressed for too long?

    Computer Specs:
    Windows 10, 21H1
    Motherboard: ASUS X570-P
    Processor: Ryzen 5 3600X
    Case: NXZT H510

The power button's function is interpreted by the BIOS and by circuitry in the PC. It's not as simple as switching a light on and off.

It's a multifunctional button- what actually happens, and how the computer responds to it depends on what state the computer is in. (Running, sleeping, powered off, hibernating...)

Suggests a problem on your MOBO - or possibly your PSU.

So is there a way I can log if a "power off" command was received by the BIOS? Are these event logged somewhere? Based on what you've posted, if there is such a log, and it is registering an "Off" event, then it is the MOBO and not the PSU. If there is no event, it is likely the PSU.

    My computer shuts down randomly
Does it shut down gracefully, or suddenly 'BANG' off?

There are event id's that may give data on the shut down - a reason- but not if it's sudden and catastrophic (the processor doesn't have the time to write anything).
Read Shutdown Logs in Event Viewer in Windows

Deciding whether it's the PSU or the mobo really requires either technical monitoring (if you're lucky enough to look at the right thing and it's fairly straghtforward) or substitution with a known good item.

Just Bang off, but the PSU hasn't switched off. It is registering a critical error though (see above).

From the tutorial I gave you:
6008 Logged as a dirty shutdown. It gives the message "The previous system shutdown at time on date was unexpected".
41 The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Problem is that doesn't help with the diagnosis.

Hopefully you're not overclocking, and you've checked there's no overheating issue?
Also confirm you've made no hardware changes that could be related.

    Hi,

This event leaves you with under Powered alimentation, over heating and what was the computer doing when it happens, as the most cost effective troubleshooting startup point.

I can confirm that there were no hardware changes and there never has been any overclocking. I have AMD Ryzen Master running, which gives me the CPU temp, and it was normal all day.

Funny thing is that it hasn't done it all day. This morning, it was every 5 minutes or so. Last night the same. The only thing I did this morning that could be anything of consequence would be removing the plugs from the motherboard controlling the reset/pwr/leds/etc. I had them off and it still did it, then I plugged them back in. Since then nothing.

Maybe there was conductive dust or something on the pins? I will have to wait and see.

It is worth noting that I am using a UPS. I notice that several other accessories that are also attached to the UPS do not shut off when the problem occurs, and the PSU stays on. So I am ruling this out as a problem at the moment, but I will probably try bypassing it if it continues.

Question: Would a 6008 be caused by long pressing the power button? Wouldn't a 41 always follow a 6008?

The PC will not turn on unless the PSU provides a stable +5V power supply to the motherboard. Pressing the ON button connects the +5V standby line to the PSU which commands the PSU to turn on. You can check this aspect of PSU operation using the paperclip test - Security check
