    External SSD not recognised

I have bought an M.2 SSD to upgrade a laptop, as follows:

Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB SATA M.2 (2280) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-N6E1T0)

Windows 10 PRO on the laptop Ver. 21H1

The drive isn't recognised on either the laptop I wish to clone onto the SSD or on my desktop PC.

Using Disk Management I the first message I get is that I must initialise the disk using either MBR or GPT.

After selecting either of these I get the message "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Are you sure the computers you are trying to use the SSD in will support SATA in the M.2 slots? Many computers will only support NVMe SSDs in the M.2 slots. It would help if you told us the make and model of the computers or motherboards.

Also some computers require a BIOS setting to enable the M.2 slot, especially on those computers where installing a SATA SSD in an M.2 slot will disable other SATA ports.

My desktop that doesn't recognize it is an Omen HP PC880. Processor i7-8700 .

The laptop that I am connecting it to via USB so I can clone the laptop to the M.2 and then fit the M.2 to the laptop is an

I originally bough an NVMe M.2 for the laptop as recommended by Crucial. I cloned it in the manner I am attempting now with this M.2 and it was recognised by the laptop when connected via an enclosure but not recognised by the laptop when slotted into the M.2 slot. In another thread on this forum I was told that this laptop wouldn't take an NVme and needed a SATA M.2 SSD.

The HP Omen PC 880 needs an NVMe SSD:

We don't know which adapter you are using to connect the SSD via USB, it might be NVMe only as well.

The adapter says SSK SHE-C325. It's only been through this that I have learnt there are different types on M2. I use an old M.2 (8+ years at a guess) in both the laptop and the Omen and they both work fine. It says Hynix on it but no other info.

Belarc calls this SSD SCSI disk device.

So I need a different enclosure do I in clone the laptop? An M.2 SATA enclosure?

Found the order for the enclosure:

Well, read the order for the enclosure. Notice it says Fits only NVMe PCI-E. That means it won't work with a SATA SSD.

Now, with an NVMe SSD in the adapter, you can use it on the laptop via USB because Windows has it's own NVMe driver. But you can't boot your laptop from it because your laptop firmware (BIOS) does not have NVMe support.

To use the SATA SSD on the desktop computer you have two choices. You could get a USB enclosure that supports the SATA SSD and connect it via USB. Or you can use a PCIe adapter card that goes in one of the expansion slots on the motherboard that has a SATA M.2 slot on it.

OK thanks very much for your help it'll have to be the enclosure option as I want to clone the laptop then install it in there.

One thing to watch out for is that NVMe can only boot in UEFI mode. If the laptop is booting in legacy BIOS (CSM) mode from an MBR partitioned drive, the clone won't boot in the desktop. Assuming you get an NVMe SSD for the desktop, that is.

Here's another option for using the SATA M.2 SSD in the desktop:

The desktop only came into this as another way of checking the M.2 drive.

I just want to upgrade the existing M.2 in the laptop.

Ok, then just a USB to SATA M.2 enclosure is all you need.
