    16384GB partition on 3TB, Windows 10.0.19043.1237

    Hi,

Bought a new external drive enclosure to use with an existing drive, for backups. The external enclosure is USB 3.0, 3.5inch SATA iii backward compatible, S355U3. The hard drive is a WD30EZRZ, 64 mb cache, 3TB, 5400rpm.

In Windows explorer, the drive is not visible. In Disk Management the drive is visible but report a 16384GB partition. The usual right click options are greyed out.

In Diskpart, when the disks are listed (lis dis), the size is correctly reported as 3TB. When I view the partition (lis par), the partition is 16384 GB. As an internal drive, it all is normal. Data can be viewed, sizes ok, chkdsk clean. Put it back in the enclosure, same error. Tested the enclosure with another drive, same thing.

Suspect faulty enclosure, any other ideas?

Convert the drive to GPT partition. When the hard drive shows as unallocated space, right-click the disk and choose "Convert to GPT Disk".

You can't. It is reported as GPT... Also when you try to access the right click menu all options are greyed out.

The disk is formatted as NTFS, there is data present on the drive.

Use MiniTool Partition Wizard and delete partition and convert the disk to GPT and format partition.

I think the enclosure is not handling your drive correctly...

If you have a disk you can use to test.

Delete all volumes and partition, verify it's in gpt mode then try to create a new volume. If it want to create a 1638400MB Partiton Maximum. Your enclosure looks like it does not support LBA 48 Bit and could be limited to 2TB Max.

What is the brand and model of your enclosure ?

Agree on defective or incompatible in some way on the enclosure. Since there is data on it i assume you put it internal to test this by how you put it in your original post.

Not enough info about make model brand etc to try to look up the enclosure

no point blasting the data with a partitioning tool to have the same thing happen and have to recopy it

Something seems hinky to me, the first post says 16384GB partition but that equates to roughly 16TB, not possible on a 3TB [3000GB] drive.

    @ Malok, tomdsr and Berton.

One would expect any USB 3.0 enclosure would support LBA. But I also think that might be the issue. Tested a 1TB WD and the drive was normal. Tested another drive, 4TB Seagate, same partition size reported. 16384GB...

    Returning enclosure tomorrow. Thank you.
