False Positive Bad Blocks on SSD?

Hi, I recently tried copying files from my Samsung 870 EVO SSD and received a cyclic redundancy error.

One file was damaged and could not be read.

I ran /r using chkdsk and it reported 121 bad blocks.
I repeated the scan and it found 1 bad block.

Today I ran a Full Scan using the Samsung Magician tool and it reported no bad blocks.

The file on the drive was a torrent (a linux ISO), I can't be certain but I think it could have been an incomplete download.
I think files downloaded from a torrent will appear to take a certain amount of disk space until the file is completed?

So I am wondering if the bad blocks reported were just parts of the torrent that had not been downloaded?

And should I return my drive for a replacement?
I have been looking into getting a replacement from Samsung, so far I have been sent through two departments and now I have to make a telephone call to somewhere else.
Also looking into the terms under the Warranty it reads that they test the drive and if they do not find any faults they return it, so if the Samsung Magician is reporting the drive is fine do I even need to worry?

@decatron I would delete the suspected bad file then run chkdsk again and then Samsung Magician. If both are clean then you know an incomplete download was the problem. If Magician indicates a problem then initiate a return.

Thanks; I forgot to mention I deleted the damaged file after the first scan on chkdsk.
So Samsung Magician says it's ok now.

I am still wondering if it's possible that a partially downloaded file would appear as a bad block?

As for the file itself, I quit using Torrent some time ago with Linux downloads because of bad files. Torrent was more effective for me back in Dial-Up days when everything was slow with 53Kbps connections, with my 25Mbps a 2.5GB Linux .iso file doesn't take near as long and much more reliable. I follow things Linux on distrowatch.com. And I use the verification offered such as SHA256 to verify the download when it finishes.

What you have to understand is if bad blocks are found they are marked bad and then dont get scanned again so the bad blocks are still there and if you get more then the disk is on its way out bad blocks cant be fixed

Thank you Samuria, that was my understanding, so I am wondering if more bad blocks are likely to appear and if I need/should to get the drive replaced?

You can use a Utility like Hard disk sentinel to verify the "health" of your drive.

The 870 EVO has a Life Writes Cycle of 150TB of write data per 250GB of capacity.
In my case I'll expect a 1TB drive to last 3-4 years. as magician reports around 1000 days left.
I don't understand how they can calculate a MTBF of 1.5 millions hours (171 years) with a TBW of 600TB ?

I was not really watching this when I bought the disk, But I burned some kingston and crucial real quick before.
So I guess If you live fast you die young.

Ex: a 1TB disk will endure around 600TB of writes before giving up (Will certainely get the PRO next time).

If your LifeTime Writes is getting high. Consider Replacing the disk.

If your Lifetime Writes is low. Consider replacing it under waranty.
Verify the drive often and if bad blocks continue to pop up... Replace without a second tought.
Bad blocks should start to appear near the end of life of the product, not new.

While I never had trouble with samsung. you may have a dud.

If "Samsung Magician" and "Hard Disk Sentinel" don't report any bad blocks/sectors, then the drive is fine.

I recently had a Samsung 870 EVO (4 TB model) go bad.

When i first got it, it had 2 bad blocks/sectors right out of the box (i should have returned it, i know)
but i decided to keep it, since Samsung deems up to 10 bad blocks/sectors as "ok".

After 4 months of light use (around 5.2 TBW) it suddenly got 10 more bad blocks on it (overnight),
A total of 12 bad blocks at that point.

Two days later it suddenly got 6 more bad blocks on it (for a total of 18 bad blocks).

At this point i decided to RMA the drive, as it was clearly failing
(the store where i got it will most likely give me a new drive).

Just wanted to show you what a failing drive will look like in "Samsung Magician" and "Hard Disk Sentinel"

    Samsung Magician:

(note the "Failing LBA" in the top-right corner)

    (S.M.A.R.T. Data from Samsung Magician)

    Hard Disk Sentinel:

So if your drive was failing, it would show stuff like that (from those two programs).

Not every SMART-data software can be trusted though.

CrystalDiskInfo (on the same drive) seem to think the drive is just fine, and gives it a 99% Health:

So definitely use Samsung Magician (or Hard Disk Sentinel) to check if your drive is fine.

And in your case, the drive is probably fine.
