Don't Know Where to Begin - Weird Mouse Behavior

Windows 10 Pro 64bit Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1202). Home build: Gigabyte AUROS MB, AMD Ryzen 9 3900X CPU

For several weeks, the left mouse key has behaved unpredictably. When I try to drag a document or video file to a different directory, the mouse reacts like a double click and the file comes up in the associated application (MSWord, VLC, etc). When I hover over a file and press the left key to rename the file, after a fraction of a second, the file reverts to standard view. This 'double click behavior' repeats 3 or 4 times, and then I'm able to complete the rename as originally intended. When I right click the mouse and select Rename, the file name appears to accept the action but after typing a few keys, reverts to standard view. I have tried several mice and had the same results on this computer, so I'm thinking it's not the mouse. (I've tried the mice on other computers and they work as you'd expect). For starters, is this a hardware or software issue? Where should I begin to isolate the problem?

If you haven't already, go to mouse properties in control panel and adjust double click speed. You might also try switching primary and secondary buttons. Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks for suggestions but no joy

I switched the Left-Right mouse buttons and slowed the double click time to slowest speed, but there are no noticeable improvements. I'll be on the road for the next week, so if further suggestions are posted and I don't reply immediately, I surely will next week. Thanks to all.

Type command prompt in search, then right click on the result, select Run as Administrator. When the box opens, type sfs /scannnow , Let this command finish. If the result says files have been repaired, run it again, until no errors are found. If un-repairable errors are found, run : DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth . Please report back on the results.
