Download SmartPak from Liteon to update the Firmware on the drive, which will allow a larger variety of discs to be recognized by the drive.
If no discs are being recognized the optical laser has failed and the drive needs to be replaced.

Afraid it doesn't work for me: the programme looks for a later version which it never finds (times out looking) and the author's email address is invalid, so it looks like it's defunct.

    It's version TN03 from 2012, though.

Thanks, I got that and will try it later.

I cleaned both drives with a wet cleaner. Twice. The Lite-On still won't read a DVD-RAM disc, but the LG one did read the two -RAMs presented to it.

I had though the discs had perhaps deteriorated, despite being stored on their edges away from light, but this can hardly be the case as the LG read a year-old disc this morning, which the Lite-On wouldn't,

Best solution would perhaps be to read the discs and re-write them on more common DVD types.
