    USB Port problem

    ASRock Z170 Pro4 (CPUSocket)
    Intel Z170 (Skylake PCH-H)
    Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 19042.1165 (20H2)

I have 8 usb ports, seven 3.0, one 2.0., Two in the front, and six in back.

The 2.0 seems to be failing. Some times it works, and other time no. I plugged in an external ssd recently, and it periodically kept repeatedly connecting and disconnecting,

Other times, it takes several attempts at plugging before it is recognized.

Do those symptoms point to something specific? The port itself, a cable, etc.? One problem for me is that it's a front usb port, so it gets more work than the six in the back due too it's proximity and convenience.

If the port itself is defective, could it be swapped out for one in the back? I'd prefer a 3.0 port anyway. Is there a any complications with swapping it out beyond mounting the hardware? I don't understand their purpose of outfitting the machine with an outdated port in the first place.

One other thing. Is it possible that one port can affect another. The 3.0 port adjacent to the 2.0 is used for my logitech receiver. For a while now, I occasionally lose connectivity and have to pull it out and plug back in to resume.

Over time anything that plugs into something else can be damaged or the contacts loosened to the point of intermittent failures. I don't care to use the front panel ports if not necessary as they are easier to bump so have USB Hubs or extensions in the rear ports. Also important to use the correct cables, USB 2 to USB 2 and USB 3 to USB 3, most times the device end of the USB 3 cable is shaped differently that the USB 2 cable and will fit only USB 3 devices. There's also the possibility that a USB 2 device won't work on a USB 3 port even though 3 is supposed to backward compatible with 2, see it often with older printers that the setup instructions mention only USB 2 and have only a USB 2 cable with them.

So can I switch it out with one of the 3.0 from the back?

Switch it out as in plug your usb device in the back? Yes.

Switch it out, like physically remove a usb port? No.

In the past, with the receiver in the back, I had sporadic wireless signal issues with my mouse/keyboard, so I moved it to the front.

Is it the distance, or the direct line to the receiver that is the main compromise when plugging into a rear port? If I got a hub for the back so It would not be blocked, would I still risk the wi-fi stuff versus plugging directly into the port?
