    Windows 10 [20Hx]1Fresh install - Asus x299a - Base drivers missing

    Hi

My current rig is not updating from 1909 to the latest release and in my wisdom Ive managed to lock out all updates.
So a fresh install, downloaded from microsofts website creating a fresh USB windows10 installer and once done presented a catalogue of issues.
I seem to have about 40+ missing drivers in the device panel all showing as Base Drivers.
Ive had a check and seem to be linked to HP printer but also I suspect this may be more to do with the intel drivers.
Ive been to the Asus x299a driver link and downloaded all drivers that seem relevant:

    Audio_6.0.1.8273_20171225
    DRV_LAN_Intel_TP_W10_64_VER229160_20190401R
    DRV_MEI_Intel_Cons_KBL_TP_W10_64_V19521401470_20200710R
    MEUpdateTool_11.12.82.1838_T
    setupchipset
    SW_ASUS_CPU-Z_W10_64_V196_20210811R

A manual install of AWD SES Driver Setup (x64) as this was showing as missing.

    Im intending to try ITBM_1.0.0.1031_20170623

Ive got the install backed up with the listed updates. And before restoring back to the new install I was hoping for some signposts on what I need to do to and what I need to omit.

On the last install I ran Intel-Driver-and-Support-Assistant-Installer and this reported nothing missing and of course windows update and the windows update driver in the device manager are not finding anything.

No supported driver or software updates are available for your system

Im totally confused as on the current 1909 install there are no evident issues.

So what I am seeking is any advice and direction on which driver package I am likely to need and anything else I can try.

    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks
    M

Hi, your MBO seems to be from about 2018, so not 'old'.

You've not provided a link to its drivers, which I can't find on a quick search.

So a fresh install, downloaded from microsofts website creating a fresh USB windows10 installer and once done presented a catalogue of issues.
Please confirm the O/S you've installed is 64bits not 32 bits (which might exclude some drivers).

With each major build of Windows, a new set of drivers is delivered. These drivers may be the same or different versions to those associated with the previous build.

Some possible things that could happen:
a.Some drivers are customised by the manufacturer and should be acquired from the manufacurer. (More true for laptops).
    b. Some utilities and drivers are ONLY available from the manufacturer (typical might be backlighting, special hot keys...).
    c. There's an error in the list for one or more pieces of hardware.

If ASUS supplies a driver update tool, then try using that.

Note that you can reinstall build 1909 should you wish.

My current rig is not updating from 1909 to the latest release
    Some possible causes:
    a. You have disabled Windows Update
    b. MS has applied a 'compatibility hold' - i.e. there would be a problem if you updated beyond 1909.
    c. Less likely- you might need a BIOS/UEFI update.
    d. It's trying but failing (but you might have noticed that).

Have you checked using the ASUS site with other users of you MBO?

    @mfx

Go here, choose Windows 10 64 bit, and get the LAN, Chipset, and Audio drivers.
Download them, and install them. If they tell you to reboot, do it...

    PRIME X299-A|Motherboards|ASUS Global

That should take care of about 90% of the Device Manager issues.

    /edit

Looks like you already got those drivers.

How about post a screenshot of Device Manager with View > Show Hidden Devices, check marked.

Hi sorry yes 64 bit only apologies just taken as a given my bad.
    PRIME X299-A|Motherboards|ASUS Global
    Same as Ghot posted.

Im guessing dont need the RAID drivers as not running raid.

With the OS hard drive do these drives need a specific driver
Ill give it a retry tonight and pop back with the result. Shuldnt take long to host back to the fresh install.

Thanks just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing anything obvious that some experienced users may have come across and didnt want to overload the install with unecessary software.

I havnt updated the bios yet. Should I if not having an issue or recommended regardless due to I guess drivers maybe seeking them.

    Thanks again.

See what version your current BIOS is. Looks like they just came out with a new one about 2 weeks ago.

Flash the BIOS from within the BIOS. Put the new BIOS on a USB stick.

IF you redo the drivers... do the Chipset driver... first.

When looking for missing drivers... try doing a Google search for the Hardware ID.
That usually makes things a bit easier.
Usually, the 2nd line of the Hardware IDs yields the best search results.

I just picked a random weird driver for the screenshot.

Also... sometimes it takes Microsoft a day or three, to figure out that you NEED a driver or two.
I've gotten drivers from Microsoft...weeks or months, after the fact.

Good luck... I wouldn't worry about the printer.... till after the other drivers are taken care of.

Success. Did a fresh install. Ran into some boot problems on the OS install; During the windows install the drive management popped up. Chose the OS drive and created new (no format). Kept reporting GPT issue, not sure why. In the end loaded up Macrium PE environment. Prepped drive with install to new hardware. Then rebooted from the Win install USB and installed fine.
All the drivers installed fine. I did not or ever been aware on the Windows update pane there's a driver install option. Selected this and tick boxed everything listed (40 or so). All windows updates installed and here I am. So thank you for the direction and help. Transpires I didn't require any 3rd party drivers for the core components only external music kit and interfaces etc. Ironically crossed my mind "why are all these 3rd party drivers not included". Lesson learnt.

The only issue I have now which is likely either something Ive done during the hard drive prep I noted at the start or Macrium has (or now leaves as updated to v8) leaves a virtual drive. But this is not something Ive seen before (jpeg attached).

    Windows 10 OS Bootup.jpg - Google Drive

Im loading and running good from the top option and not had the balls (dispair) to try option 2, I know I have the back up so could restore but time atm.
Any ideas and how/can I get rid of it. Doesn't seem an issue however not something Id normally expect to see so would like to squash it.

    Thanks again.

PS The HP printer just installed automatically from the system tray's notification panel - all good.
