    Seeking Flash Drive Recommendations

32GB, USB 3.0 (or higher), USB 2.0 (backwards compatible), Fast read speed, Decent write speed. ~$10us or ???

The complaints on Amazon are the same for every drive... Slow. Starts fast and becomes slow. Stops transfers for long periods of time. Unusable for making large transfers all at once. Write speeds too slow to use. Lost data...

Some reviews love each drive and someone hates on every single one, and not just in the normal hit and miss of Amazon reviews.

Do you have any experience with a 'good' flash drive? Please share opinions and speeds.

To tell the truth, I think all of the ones I've ever had were hand-me-downs. Never put large files on them. I don't think I've even owed one more than 4gb, or 8 at the most. Don't remember them getting hot, put who knows if they did or not.

    Thanks, emcee2

    Most USB drives are slow.
They may have a fast USB 3.x communication device but the flash memory is the bottle neck.
Real fast USB drives are expensive. How much you want to spend for a 32G USB drive?

You get what you pay for. UFDs are "slow" because they´re inexpensive. They´re inexpensive because they don´t a have a sophisticated controller, as SSDs do.

A fast UFD is a NVMe SSD put in a small enclosure.

Whatever you buy, buy twins. Sometimes one of two will suddenly fail during input or output and the other one works just fine. For critical non-backed-up stuff - I often use twin USB flash devices.

I don't mind the speed too much but then I'm from back in the floppy disk days, talk about slow. Then there's the work I do with clients and on-site time.

Remember how some software came with a stack of 3.5 inch disks.

I still have a full set of MS-DOS 6 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11, haven't counted them in awhile but probably about 15. But I also have a Toshiba Tecra Notebook that works.

    hey Ghot,
I purchased the 64GB version of that one back in June reformatted it as NTFS file system and it has been running great for me...
33MB/s fast enough for me... as I only have USB 3.0/2.0 ports on my case..
my motherboard I think has a USB 3.1 header but could not use it...
