Odd Trackpad Behaviour

Windows 10 ver 20H2. SONY VAIO laptop with Samsung 860 SSD, 4GB RAM.

Initially, the laptop worked fine. Recently an odd problem has surfaced.

I prefer to use a wireless mouse (Logitech V450 Nano) which behaves as expected. However, the laptop's own trackpad is (for want of a better word) is 'inverted'.

To explain: Move finger UP the trackpad (towards the keyboard) and the cursor moves DOWN. Move your finger RIGHT on the trackpad and the cursor moves LEFT.

Searches suggest changing some settings under Trackpad in Device Manager, however, looking in Device Manager there is no entry for Trackpad - only two entries for mouse: HID-compliant Mouse and PS/2 Compatible Mouse.

There are 3 possible trackpad entries in Human Interface Devices:
HID-compliant consumer control device
HID-compliant vendor-defined device
HID-compliant vendor-defined device
but delving into the properties of each, none seems to be for the trackpad.



In Settings > Devices there is no entry in Trackpad for inverting the trackpad



So, I'm rather stumped.

As you can see from the second image I posted, I do not have the 'Scroll & Zoom' settings available (the 2-finger scroll & zoom are only available for preciscion touchpads and mine dates from 2008) hence the missing option.

This link (found by following links from the end of your post) says how to change the scroll direction by editing the registry.

To reverse the mouse scrolling direction using the Registry (need to scroll down the page - about halfway)

I just need to figure out WHICH of the three Human Interface Devices matches the VID ID of the trackpad in

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID

Will report back after I have attempted this.

You can install a precision driver. Example: I had nothing in Settings for disabling my touchpad. I installed a precision driver from MS, which gave me many fewer other settings compared to the native driver, but added that. I then rolled back the driver, restoring the native driver. Rather to my surprise, the settings for disabling the touchpad were retained, and it is still designated as 'precision'.

You might find the same with reversing the direction.

The 'hack' of installing a precision driver looks promising.

Which to try first - the registry hack or the driver hack?

Do you have a link for the preciscion driver at all?

Naturally I can't guarantee what worked for me will work for you, but it's a matter of finding what works for you... the problem is there are several different manufacturers' drivers, and Synaptics has at least 3 very different incarnations. Brink struggles to represent these in tutorials as it's not possible to show examples of all.
