HP Deskjet 9300 printer on Win 7 or Win 8.1

    Hi,
I have an old HP Deskjet 9300 printer and I am trying to install it on one of my two PCs, one runnining on Win 7, the other - on Win 8.1 ...

    On win8.1:
I've tried all the steps adviced in the (HP support forum), but I still can't install it.

    What happens:

    1. I add a printer in "devices and printers" on LPT1 port
    2. I plug in the printer in the usb
****( !!no recognition from windows - like automatic installation)
anyway I try to choose USB port instead of LPT 1 in the printer properties
**** (!! there is no such option in the drop down menu for ports - only LPT1, LPT2, COM1,COM2 etc.)

    Any ideas?

I haven't seen the issue since the time when HP was changing from the 25-pin LPT/PRN ports/cables to USB cables. It also when their install routine required the printer NOT be connected until prompted to connect during the process, should create the necessary USB entry. The inclusion of 25-pin LPT and 9-pin/25-pin Comm ports on computers has been discontinued for some time, may be some USB to those port adapters available.

Thank you for the time to answer, unfortunately I'm quite ignorant in this field and don't really know what you are saying. Have a nice day!

I am using a cable I bought today which fits on my hp 9300 deskjet (i think it's a serial port) and a usb on the other end... Of course this has nothing to do with what you say.

Since you list Windows 8.1 it will be awhile before I have time to fire up my Win8.1 Notebook but I don't have an old printer to work with in replicating your problem.

It has been years, but I dimly recall having to follow a ritual to install some HP printers.

That was: do not connect the printer. Begin the driver package install. At some point, you'll be told to connect the printer.

I hope that helps, but I'm not optimistic.

Does it print a diagnostics page and sample page ? This is internal to the Printer to show whether the hardware is working.

It is not directly supported for Windows 8.1/10.

From your reference in post #1 It suggests using a Deskjet 1220c driver.

Go thru the Add printer dialogue, Use an existing port > LPT1: (Printer Port)

Next > you would select HP > Deskjet 1220c from the dialogue boxes and it will be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalogue if not already present.

I'm using Windows 10, however that dialogue box is very old and was the same in Windows 8.1

Thanks... but... it doesn't ask me to plug in the usb cable on my pc. Thanks again for your reply.

Yes, I've done that. The problem is, after I install it on LPT1 port, they advice me to change the port to usb port, but there is no such thing on my "machine"...

Stupid question of the night: you noticed the scroll bar on the right of the "ports" window, right? What do you get if you scroll down?
