    CanoScan 4200F for Windows 10

I've looked through the threads but can't seem to find my answer.

Today I inherited CanoScan 4200F, which isn't compatible with Windows 10. I've no installation CD and can't find any software online to help me get it working.

    Any ideas?

Canon suggests the Windows 7 drivers, but they are available only for Windows 7 X86 (32 bit). Presumably they are of no use to you.

Vuescan (VueScan Scanner Software for macOS Big Sur, Windows 10, and Linux) claims to support your scanner. The bad news is that it isn't free; the standard version is $40US. The good news is that you can test it for free.

I checked the Microsoft Update catalog. The search feature only comes up with XP drivers from 2006.

Windows Update doesn't install anything? I have a Brother multifunction device that got drivers when it was attached, including WIA drives for its scanner function. (On the other hand, I tend to prefer Brother because they seem to be better at supporting old devices than other major players, like HP and Canon.)

The problem I'm facing is that I can't get the Canon software onto my PC, it's always been Windows 10. Currently trying to download from the Canon site for the software on 7 or Vista to see it it's compatible but it's not downloading.

I've just paid for the software above and when I try to scan it states:

I ran into a similar issue with an older HP MFP, admittedly old by the client, yesterday in trying to install it on the latest Win10, couldn't find updated software. The issue started with wanting Wireless printing but the printer doesn't support the needed Wireless Direct that new ones do. The scanner function oddly was supported by the built-in Windows Fax and Scan in the Start, W section, Windows Accessories.

You didn't use the free trial period for VueScan first?

I doubt that any of the old drivers from Canon are suitable, as none are 64 bit.

The VueScan message seems oddly worded. The 4200F is on the supported list (at least on the Hamrick web page) for Win10 X64.

Did you install Vuescan as Administrator? This allows for installation of any drivers needed. I would also execute the software as Administrator.
Another workaround is to install Windows 7 or newer 32-bit on a virtual machine so you can share the scanner and install the Windows 7 32-bit drivers. This is not very convenient but works. You can even run the scanner's software in a Window (Unity mode) instead of viewing the whole virtual desktop (Standard mode).

I just found Windows 7 64-bit drivers from Canon Europe's support site:
