USB 3 hub connects and reconnects frequently

    Hi All,

I have an office laptop HP Elitebook 840 G5 running Windows 10 Enterprise with Windows 21H1 update.
My USB 3.0 hub (with external keyboard and mouse) connected to it disconnects and connects back frequently. This leaves me with no keyboard/mouse from time to time (even while in typing) and it is too frustrating. The issue has been there for sometime now and not specific to latest Windows 10 update.

    I have gone through various suggestions to resolve this issue. Here is what I have already tried;

    - Re-installed the Intel USB 3.0/3.1 eXtensible Host Controller drivers and rebooted
    - In PowerManagement I have unchecked device turn-off to save power

I did not find any vendor specific USB driver on HP site.

I know that this question has been asked multiple times on this forum, however even after trying out the options suggested I am unable to resolve the issue on my laptop.

    Please help!

    Regards,
    Rinjo

OR are you saying that both the keyboard and the mouse are connected directly to the laptop usb ports

A comment on what @Macboatmaster asked, I've seen issues with USB devices that only need USB 2 or USB 1.1 have issues with the newer/faster USB 3 ports, never found the reason that is such other than it sometimes worked with turning off power management for the ports, make them always-on. Adding to the issue can be the built-in/Legacy setting for USB in the BIOS which gives boot support for USB 2 but not usually for USB 3 until the OS has loaded. Haven't had problems with the newer combination USB2/3 ports as my Notebooks with them also have Bluetooth Wireless and I use Bluetooth mice whenever possible.

When it happened last time to me, I solved the problem by changing the USB Cable.
And another time, my USB 3 Hub failed data transfer even though it was still able to charge.
If you would like to know if the problem is related to hardware instead of the software, you will need to try:
    - Another USB Port
    - Another USB Hub
    - Another USB Cable

    if possible

    - Another Computer/OS

(Sorry, if the reply is not too much helpful, just not everytime the problem is software or drivers)

I might have resolved the issue

    Hi All,

First of all thanks for your help and inputs.

So they keyboard and mouse are connected to a hub and then that is connected to the laptop usb port is that correct please
OR are you saying that both the keyboard and the mouse are connected directly to the laptop usb ports
The keyboard and mouse are connected to usb 3.0 hub and hub is connected to usb 3.1 port on the laptop.

In my post I mentioned the below option that I had already tried.
In PowerManagement I have unchecked device turn-off to save power
What I meant was I unchecked the device turn-off to save power present under the "power management" tab of USB Controller properties in Device Manager.

What actually seems to have worked for me since yesterday evening is the following change.
I went to "Edit Plan Settings" under "Power Options" > Change advanced power settings > USB Settings > USB selective suspend setting > "Disabled" for both On Battery and Plugged In.

Post this change I have not observed any disconnection and reconnection till now.
I will keep observing if I get the issue again.

Thanks again for all your inputs and help!

    Again observing the issue

    Hi All,

I have again started observing this issue, although it is not so frequent as before.
One observation I have made is the disconnection to the USB hub is happening in sync my wifi network disconnection.
When my wifi disconnects due to some reason, the USB hub also disconnects and connects back several times before stabilizing.

Not sure what is the relation between the wifi disconnection and USB hub.

    Regards,
