Pretty sure you can add nvme boot capability, I have added it to an old b75 motherboard.

It can be done with either a bios update, or with clover on a usb stick. Set the machine to boot to the usb stick, clover boot manger is on there and adds nvme boot capability - just needs a pcie to nvme adapter

    something like this:

M.2 NVMe SSD to PCIE 3.0 X4/X1 desktop state card pcs adapter drive 1 N4F8 | eBay

PCIE to M2 Adapter PCI Express 3.0 x1 to NVME SSD Adapter Support 2230 2242 Z3 | eBay

I updated to the latest CU with no change to the drive recognition issue. I did the FU to 21H1 and things haven't changed. Flash drives are recognized immediately, but the two HDDs take ten to thirty minutes to get recognized. Once recognized, they work fine. I tried Disk Management and Device Management to populate the drives on the system, but nothing works. I tried powering and unpowering the drives while connected with various USB cables with no change. The only time I can get the HDDs recognized is to have them powered up and connected to the USB port and then unplugging and plugging in a flash drive. I give up on what can be causing this and how to manually trigger the recognition of the HDDs. I will just plug in the HDD when I plan to use one a few hours in advance of doing the system image saves I use them for. Windows says the drivers for these HDDs are current. I guess I'll just live with the issue.

Do you know anyone that has a different brand of USB External Drive that you could borrow to see if the behavior is the same? I’m wondering if the problem is related to the brand. Just a thought but I think it’s worth a try.

Doesn't sound like a backup, simply just moved the files from one location to another.

FWIW, front USBs are notoriously unreliable because ...
    - they can be cheaper ports that will not support/supply the power needed to run anything other than a flash stick
    and/or
    - often simply cheap-end hubs (frequently unpowered) rather than (rear) USB ports that are integrated from the mobo.

These two drives have external power supply and I have checked it for proper voltage. I successfully ran a MR system image backup last night to one of the drives. Since the problem started after a late CU for v.2004 prior to FU for 20H2, I suspect it's just software related. At this point, I can live with the issue until forced to go to W11.
