    Seagate 8TB Drive Issues

    Hello All

    Windows 10 Pro 21H1 19043.1055
    M.2 Boot drive
Windows Defender fully up to date/Malwarebytes 4.4.0 Free Fully up to date as well

    Issue is:
Slow External Drive when writing or reading from it, Ran Part way with Disk Genius verify/bad sector scan, when i stopped it was only 15 percent done, and had about 3966 of Severe rated ones. Tried Full erase with Seagate tools--That failed immediately, Long Generic scan wasn't moving at all

    Is this Drive really dead?

Crystal Disk info said it was ok lol, i was like how it is ok lol

Should i reconnect it, and run some more diagnostic on it over night, or attempt full format again, and then run Disk Genius again to see if it sees any more bad sectors after that

By default bad sectors are remapped to engineering tracks and you never see them only when they are full do bad sectors show up the other thing after a bad secotors are found by disk checkit writes them bad so any test after wont show them as it doesnt check those marked bad which fools people thinking its ok.

Bad block cant be recovered they are dead. Most disk makers have a test software on their site specific for their drives and you should run that if its under warrenty which with a lot is 5 years you need the report from the test to get a new disk

Ok I'll try that software again later, eariler when i ran Seagate software, it just not even moved on the Long Generic test, as the drive is in External usb Enclosure, i don't have room inside to place it in there or any sata power adapters left.

But i'll give it another shot, might take 19 hours to finish, but i can work on Gaming Laptop in morning if it's not done yet

Won this Drive from Seagate in a Twitter Contest, January 2019, not even sure if it's covered by any warranty

Please tell us you have been making routine full image backups of OS and data partitions before this began happening. If not, perhaps consider making backups while you still probably can, at least copy off your data folders and files.

Yes already made System image backup to a seperate 1TB Western digital drive in another Enclosure, so think im fine, even though problems happen with this 8TB drive, though this drive was slow for months.

So figured something may be wrong with it-even though crystal disk info said it was fine, Seagate tools long generic test passed in the past. May run chkdsk over night, and see what the results are from that, or Seagate Tools Long Generic test again. If i had space inside This PC tower, and another working Sata plug, i'd put it inside, and test it that way, probably be faster than in this Enclosure with USB 3.2 Gen 1, but is what it is

That Drive didn't have any files left on it, did copy off the files prior to attempting to scan with chkdsk and seagate tools and such, drive averages at least 19 hours to do one scan

A HDD has a spinning disk inside. Rotating disks has a gyroscopic effect, so once connected, never, ever move it.

There are two types of disk issues: Logical (data corruption) and Hardware. Logical can be fixed by running check disk or even formatting the drive. Hardware issues can be fixed.

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk X: /f (replace x with the drive letter)
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to un mount the drive = yes

Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

If it finds bad blocks, bad clusters or bad sectors it's time to replace the drive.

I donīt think so. If this was true, HDDs would never had been used in laptops, or as external USB disks.

    Seagate 8TB Drive issues

Ok Chkdsk completed, Okb in bad sectors found, wonder if it was a false positive from Disk Genuis first program i ran, and once it's plugged in, i never ever move the drives ever

    Code:
    PS R:\> chkdsk /f
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y
Volume dismounted. All opened handles to this volume are now invalid.

Till recently there were no other options. Now you have the SSDs to replace the HDDs.
Why do you think laptops HDD run at 5400 rpm and are 2.5" and desktops HDD runs at 7200 rpm and are 3.5"?
When you force the disk to change its rotating plane, the disk bents and touch the reading sensor.

Megahertz said: " A HDD has a spinning disk inside. Rotating disks has a gyroscopic effect, so once connected, never, ever move it." I think it is possible to amend the above sentence. Concerning internal and/or external HDDs in or attached to desktops, if HDD has been working vertically, and if moved to another computer, leave HDD vertical; if it has been working horizontally, and if moved to another computer, leave HDD horizontal. Laptops are mostly used horizontally.

addendum: added an important phrase, in two places, I left out earlier.
