Hybrid Graphics Notebook. Should I let Windows Update update drivers?

Here is my Lenovo IdeaPad 330s-15ikb 81F500GYHV with Intel Core i5-8250u, Intel UHD 620 and AMD Radeon 540 switchable hybrid graphic system

I have installed the recommended drivers from Lenovo.com , precisely from HERE (serial number omitted, but should still refer to the very same branch my model is from, with the exactly same hardware).

The drivers there are very old (almost 3 years old) BUT still work well, no issues detected, apart from battery drain which can be caused by just about anything else as well.

But still, Windows Update is trying to shovel new drivers into my face. They are not optional, this thing wants to install it immediately once I go to a non-restricted WiFi hotspot. (or unless I disable driver updates via group policy, of course)

Should I let Windows Update update my graphics drivers? What kind of drivers would it install? It seems I have an OEM customized Intel driver!!!
I know that the driver it wants to install is also from 2019 so it is not very new. But newer than whats on lenovo.com

I'm on the stable 21H1 release of Windows. HOWEVER, if I go to the beta or even dev ring of windows insider, then it would want to install even newer drivers, that are current 2021 fresh drivers. How about those?

How does this driver update feature actually work in Windows Update? I read that it takes into consideration if I have OEM customized drivers and would only replace it if it deems it to be better. But is that so?Hybrid Graphics Notebook. Should I let Windows Update update drivers?-drvupd.png

Create a restore point and try the updates. If you have any issues, restore back.

I usually prefer to manually download latest driver from Intel or nVidia etc to make sure I have all the features and the Intel/nVidia Control Panel (Windows Update usually doesn't install the Control Panel).

No need for any complications, just do the Intel Display driver update.
You will be able to Roll back the driver anyway if required.

Does not matter about the date/version.

You have others that maybe need doing like Lenovo - System, and Intel - Extension, one of which you have not done a while back at the bottom of your list.

I have done 6 of these on my dual graphics Laptop and the latest are from 12.2018 and 03.2019
The only change seen has been the date and version number all have worked great, no worries.

Most likely Windows Update will install the driver only, not Intel Graphics Properties. You may not have access to Intel settings after the update. I would manually download and install latest driver directly from www.intel.com just to be on the safe side. It is easier than it seems. There is even an Intel utility that automatically detects your hardware, finds and installs the drivers for you.

Thank you all of you! It installed just fine, no issues detected as of yet.

It really did not install the control panel for it, it seems that is no longer part of the driver update. But soon enough, a notification popped up that Microsoft Store just finished installing a new app, Intel Graphic Command Center.

It is my understanding that it works this way now for Intel: WinUpdate now only downloads the driver and instructs the system to grab the UWP Control Panel from the MS Store, which it does. The driver is DCH, the control panel is seperated and can be updated alone.

I'm hesitant to download drivers directly from intel.com . A huge warning message is blasted by that driver assistant utility tool saying that my hardware is customized, I have customized drivers installed and those customizations would be removed if I were to install a stock driver from there. I did not proceed.

Good to know it worked out well, the new style DCH drivers and the Intel Graphics Command Centre App getting installed as well.

This applies to relatively new Intel graphics chipsets. Not valid for old ones (such as my Intel HD 4000)

Well yes but it applies all the way from 6th gen. I have a 8th generation processor. (i5-8250u)

HD4000 is considered legacy now I believe. I used to have it and I liked it. It was a trusty one! But correct, that one did not use DCH drivers

Intel HD 4000 can normally do 1920x1080 60Hz. If you add a custom resolution, it can do up to 3840x2160 24Hz, but the video stutters in full screen, so it's not useful.
