Gentlemen, nursing a Toshiba Satellite laptop on W10 v. 1904. It began life as Win 07. Subsequent to a clean install, a windows update caused my bluetooth to become an unknown device. I am sure there are instructions for fixing it and telling windows to look for and install the program that fixes it, but i've been unable to find them.
Hi, please complete specs with exact model of laptop and a URL for its driver download page.
It may be that either
- you will need to use the driver supplied by your manufacturer and protect it (tutorials) from being replaced
or
- you will need to find a different driver
or
- it may not be possible to get it working.
Was your Win 7 installation 32bits or 64?
Is your Win 10 installation 32 bits or 64?
About how old is your laptop?
Is it using the latest available BIOS for that machine?
Have you checked to see if there is precedent for this model running Win 10 wthout issue?
Note that upgrading to an O/S for which a machine was never designed carries risk and it is then your responsibility to find a solution.

Hello and thank you Dalchina for your information and directions. The device though old is serving as my learning machine for Windows (versus Apple). But before I run to find its specs: it never occurred to me that there might be a problem upgrading it. I was out of cash, and it had come to a stop. When I obtained another I did a clean install of Win 10 v.1904 and assumed it would fix the BIOS and everything else. For the most part it did. Then I began tweaking it and opened up a can of possibilities. It's a little over 10 yrs old with the A4 chip. I never found acknowledgement of Bluetooth, maybe I was connected via wifi as laptop has never left my home environment. Having found "systeminfo" cmd, I shall dig up info for the spec page. I didn't know of this command before this year.

BIOS updates are performed quite separately and by various means depending on the manufacturer.a clean install of Win 10 v.1904 and assumed it would fix the BIOS and everything else
Upgrading to later builds always carries various kinds of risks, especially with older devices, from potential driver incompatibility to the latest MS blunders.
Besides simply trying to get that working e.g. by finding a suitable driver, options might include (given it's an older device)Subsequent to a clean install, a windows update caused my bluetooth to become an unknown device.
a. uninstalling the update you mention
b. performing an in-place upgrade repair install (tutorial) of 1904 ( you can use the original install disk- boot and log in as normal, browse to that disk, run setup.exe- don't accept updates.
Then block Windows Update (tutorials, free 3rd party tools) and stay on a build that works.

Dalchina, I tried exploring the repair install but was unable to locate my copy (a friend borrowed and lost it). By the time I realized a new copy was necessary, I had to put it down. As big blobs on my screen block key symbols, I may be forced to learn laptop repair,lol, to enable progress.
If you are saying the screen appears faulty, all else is irrelevant. For a device that old, doubtful if that's worth considering. You can buy parts on some sites, but dismantling laptops is not something to be taken lightly except for disk/RAM/battery replacement e.g.As big blobs on my screen block key symbols, I may be forced to learn laptop repair,lol, to enable progress.
All builds of Windows are freely downloadable. For an in-place upgrade repair install, you need the same major build, 'bitness', base language.but was unable to locate my copy
My thanks to dalchina and MacBoatmaster and all of you who have helped me nurse this 2008 laptop along.You guys are great. Truly. You helped me from Windows 7, to 8, to 10. Now it doesn't have enough capacity or oomph to take on Windows 11, though what pieces it could cope with, was installed. When I can find a laptop with Windows 11, I'll get it. Though I have been reading reports of bugsare surfacing in Windows 11. Perhaps by the time supply issues are sorted out it might be windows 12. Never didn find a bluetooth driver that was 'supported' . But as long as I stay close to my own network this old Toshiba limps along. soon it will be a doorstop. On the plus side I did find a slew of information that I have been trying to fill in the specs page with.
Hi All, with finances stretched, Toshiba must cope: At Toshiba.com I was told there is no bluetooth driver for my laptop,saying it was a custom build, so I thought why not use a bluetooth adapter that plug into the USB port.Anyone tried these adapters?. I found a matching screen:": $50CDN. I'll work on memory and RAM, its been like 50 yrs since I worked on a motherboard so I'll leave the changing of the "guts" for now. I made a Recovery Drive of the 21H2 upgrade and ran it, it has cleaned up a bunch of issues and created even more by loading a ton of bloatware (which I saw a script for removing it somewhere on 10 Forums). But picture has improved, and pc seems to run faster, Fear not I shall return after I go to the guide and find the icon for thumbs up and the solved check mark.
Dalchina, MacBoatmaster, et al: I would gladly provide "thumbs up" or " positive check marks" if I knew where those emojis were found. My search for those emojis only revealed that they don't appear in Win+ in Windows 10. Where in Ten Forums are they hidden? Knowing this would enable me to close threads and ensure that you wonderful and knowledgeable folks would get the recognition you deserve for teaching me.
