How to troubleshoot the USB receiver mouse lagging issue?

    Hi there

We have this issue on one of our machines. It has a lag on the mouse as well occasionally on the keyboard as well. The mouse and keyboard are using a single USB receiver. It's random but yesterday it happen regularly.

What the troubleshooting steps so far:

    * The machine has 2 USB ports and tried all of them it's same issue
    * Update the driver - it's pretty generic and it's updated
    * The trackpad is fine and built-in keyboard - no lagging
    * Tested those 2 USB mouse and keyboard on other machine - worked well - no lagging
    * Tested with other USB receiver mouse only and it's not bad as the current one but it can see the lagging.
    * Bought a new HP mouse and keyboard USB receiver, tested and it's same result.
    * Use the Bluetooth mouse and wired keyboard. Worked well - NO lagging so far for last 2 days !!!
    * Been escalated to Dell Support as well - but no news as yet

Not sure what causing this. Any ideas?

    This is our environment:
    Dell Latitude laptop
    Dell monitor
    Windows 10 Version 2004
    Toshiba Dynadock docking station
    Microsoft USB mouse and keyboard
    HP USB mouse and keyboard
    Microsoft Bluetooth mouse
    Microsoft wired keyboard

I'm appreciated your help and pointer.

    Thanks

With the problem devices plugged in,check Device Manager for any alerts, then Reliability History for any entries,if so then lines 1&2 in "view tech details"might give information.
    Also,check in---dxdiag---for any reports.
Go to Settings>update and security>troubleshoot and also go through "Additional troubleshooters"
If none of the above are useful,it leaves the connection as the more likely culprit and/or the power supply to the socket.
    Now out of suggestions.

Usually this happens when the USB wireless or Bluetooth receiver in question is plugged into a USB port the power output capability of which is shared with another USB port via an onboard/internal/exteral USB hub device and one or more additional USB devices are plugged in also, via this same hub device such that its maximum power output capability exceeded from time to time─thereby causing these typical odd behaviors. The maximum current that a standard USB 3.0 port can deliver is only 900mA, so you might need to grab an externally powered USB hub for a workaround. Some USB 3.0 ports can support "BC 1.2" (Battery Charging 1.2), in which case the specific port that can support it can deliver up to 1.2A of current for accelerated charging the battery of a phone, etc..

The wireless mouse or keyboard has a low power transmitter. If it can't "see" the receiver it can fail. Routers that work on same frequency may also interfere.
Try to use a USB extension cable so that the receiver is close (less than a feet) to the mouse.

This laptop has 3 USB ports. One is used for a docking station. We tried plugin the USB receiver at the back of the laptop as well on the left hand side of the laptop. The user is left handed. We might try to put the receiver on the left hand-side.Also, would it work if put the receiver on the docking station instead?
    I will update this.

Basically it's just trial and error... if the wireless mouse uses a standard Bluetooth connection, then if the laptop comes with an internal Bluetooth feature already present, you might not actually need to use the USB Bluetooth transmitter/receiver.

True ... the Bluetooth mouse is working ok as well as the wired keyboard. But we just need to know what causing this USB receiver lagging. We managed to update 8 firmware from Dell BUT none of them relating to the USB stuff. Anyway, I'm waiting for the user to give me feedback after updating this firmware.
