    SOLVED.

HP does printer installs the opposite of what Windows 10 does. First you install the printer driver, and THEN you plug-in the printer.

After installation, the printer was "paused" and I had to unselect pause several times before the printer was "ready." Once ready, it printed a test page no problem.

Message #2 alerted me to the odd install procedure But I downloaded all the manuals etc from other posts.

    Thanks to all.
That is a typical procedure. My other Canon photo printer installs the same way.

OK but WHY? Just to one-up Microsoft?

    Hi x509!

I see that you have the same printer as I do, an HP P1006, which I've been using for many years, but which has developed a problem since I switched to Windows 10 and MS Word 2010: I can no longer get it to print 3x5 cards. (It worked fine for printing 3x5 cards when I was running Windows XP and MS Word 2003).

I've posted about this problem in another thread, and I'm wondering , if it's not too great an imposition, if you might take a look at that thread and see if you could offer any insight into how to solve the problem:

How to Print 3 x 5 Card in Word 2010?

    Will,

That link doesn't take me to a thread. Possibly you have already done this. Post a question in the HP forums. I'm going to SWAG it that their Win 10 driver doesn't support that print format, but as I said, it's a SWAG.

Thanks for the heads up about the bogus link. I think I've fixed it so that it works now.

I had to Google SWAG to find out that it means "Scientific Wild-Ass-Guess."

No, I haven't posted in the HP forums yet. I only today began to suspect that the problem may not lie in MS Word 2010 but could be a printer issue. I found an HP Support Community at https://h30434.www3.hp.com/ Is that forum you had in mind?

    S could also mean "stupid."

I read that other thread and I can't see any obvious issues. FWIW, I'm running Office Pro Plus 2013 on Win 10 Pro 64, but I haven't tried to print onto 3 x 5 index cards.

That HP link is indeed the one I had in mind. Go for it.
