HP P1006 - no longer recognized by Win 10 on two different laptops

Long story short: We have this P1006 printer that worked last time we used it, pre-pandemic, in Nov. 2019.

Powers on OK, does POST, but doesn't print even test pages. Swapped USB cable, which didn't help.

We tried to use the printer today. Was not recognized as USB plug-in to Netgear router with 2 USB ports, which used to work for sharing purposes (no WiFi). So I plugged the printer into two different laptops. Not recognized, in that a test page would not print.

So for each laptop I uninstalled the P1006. With the printer plugged directly into each system, I attempted to reinstall, but the Settings/Devices could not find this printer as a local device. Doing a Google search didn't turn up any "tricks" to get Windows to still find this printer.

So am I in the market for another low-cost laser printer? Pre-pandemic, this printer was used maybe 2 month a year.

Doesn't this printer model have a self-test function run from its own control panel so you can eliminate a printer fault as the cause?

Whilst I hope you solve the problem, if you are going to be forced to buy a new laser printer do consider a combined printer-scanner. I'd guess that you would use the scanner much more often than the printer and that would at least let you know that the unit kept on communicating correctly.
    - My 3 year old HP laser printer-scanner is in use every week but I cannot remember the last time I printed anything on it. It is still on its small capacity on-delivery sample toner cartridges.

Best of luck with the problem,
    Denis

I have a HP P1005 laserjet printer which works fine with the latest 64 bit driver so driver support is unlikely to be the issue.

@x509 try HP Print Doctor as has been recommended

    EDIT
Going through them, I've seen references to connecting the USB cable to a USB port on the laptop: try that.

Also, since the printer hasn't been used since 2019, the cartridge could be dried out.
--- Is the cartridge an HP cartridge.
--- I remember in my time we would remove the cartridge and gently "shake" it to see if we could get the last bit of life in it.
When the printer didn't print a test page, did it eject a blank page?

Personally I would use the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows as has been recommended.

In the manual, there is a section to manage supplies on page 45 followed by Clean the device on page 47.

    Good luck

    SOLVED.

HP does printer installs the opposite of what Windows 10 does. First you install the printer driver, and THEN you plug-in the printer.

After installation, the printer was "paused" and I had to unselect pause several times before the printer was "ready." Once ready, it printed a test page no problem.

Message #2 alerted me to the odd install procedure But I downloaded all the manuals etc from other posts.

    Thanks to all.
