Continuous Corruption To Video Files On External Hard Drives

I have had an external hard drive of 4 TB (Western Digital) filled with video files that are of average 5 GBs each , lately I got to realize it started sustaining corruptions where suddenly some of the files become 0 KB for no reason as even I have not accessed them lately .

So I managed to buy a 5 TB (Western Digital) drive so to clone that drive over just to make sure its not the 4 TB file failing , basically it copied fine , all files tested to be fine , but then suddenly a month later it started showing same symptoms , video files starting to appear as 0 KB files despite working fine earlier .

I deal with these drives with caution , I practically do not move them from place and I often use safely remove drive before unplugging them , the case is strange as this happen to old files not new ones being copied over else I could double check these with ease but with older files one just find them like that on attempting to access them just .

So like you see any suggestions would be appreciated .

An interesting thing to see would be the size of used spaced reported by the drives compared to the total size of files to check whether there is just corruption in the file allocation table or if the files are really 0kb in size.
Also what is the shortest amount of time between copying files to the drives and the files being reported as 0kb?
I would start to suspect the controller on the device (laptop, desktop) used to access the drives, it seems odd that two different drives show the same issue.
Have you tested both drives with an app like HD Sentinel or HDTune?

    Hello @nIGHTmAYOR,

I would certainly perform a check on the HDD first. Please perform the following and post the results . . .

     Hard Disk Sentinel

First, check your HDD using the Hard Disk Sentinel Portable Trial Version.

    About Hard Disk Sentinel:

Hard Disk Sentinel is a computer Hard Disk Drive monitoring software for Windows, Linux and DOS operating systems.

Hard Disk Sentinel [ Sentinel ] is a multi-OS SSD and HDD monitoring and analysis software. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair hard disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures. Hard Disk Sentinel gives complete textual description, tips and displays/reports the most comprehensive information about the hard disks and Solid State Disks inside the computer and in external enclosures [ USB hard disks / e-SATA hard disks ].

You can run it directly from a USB, and in my opinion, this gives the best instant report available compared to other software of the same type.

    I hope this helps.

I have downloaded HDD Sentinel Pro 5.7.4 trial , installed it and then can't quite figure how to use it to trouble shoot things , all tests run normal and output images like this :

    Hi @nIGHTmAYOR,
Don't go for advanced testing. Just run Hard Disk Sentinel, and in the first screen select your external disk. It will show an overview of the disk. For the time being that should be sufficient. If @Paul Black instructs further you can perform the advanced Tests.

In the following screenshot I have selected my external drive and its Overview is presented.

    Hi @Paul Black

I have no idea on this thread . I have just asked the OP to present the first screen and then follow your instructions.

"If @Paul Black instructs further you can perform the advanced Tests." So the ball is on your court

If the OP can get access to a second machine it would be most helpful and possibly safer, if there is actually an issue with the disk controller/ interface on his normal machine as opposed to an issue with the external drives, then the results from HD Sentinel may not provide a detailed enough picture until disk writes occur, which could possibly further corrupt the data on the external drives, if indeed it is corrupted.

Nothing seems fishy even with older 4 TB drive .
