    Cerawy,

    SanDisk support were useless.

    I just stumbled on this
Samsung on disk capacity 93pc usable - Samsung Support

Using my 400GB as the example,
    400 x 93% x (1000/1024)2 = 354GB
is close to the 366GB capacity reported by Windows. And they did say "approximately".

    All the best,
    Denis

I've just submitted a question to SanDisk by email instead.

Do post back with whatever you learn from them and I'll do the same.

    All the best,

Yes but it was useless. They just said I should try to format it again if I was unhappy with it. But, like you, what I had asked for was an explanation.

It seems to me that Samsung's explanation of the IDEMA standard [post #21 above] is the explanation.
So your "512GB" is, after the 1024x1024 adjustment, 488GB and 93% of that is 454GB. That is "approximately" the same as the 460GB Windows reports to you, just as Samsung explain.

    All the best,
    Denis

It looks like Apple unlike Microsoft agrees with the drive manufacturers and reports the drive size in decimal.

Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?
