I have just rummaged through TestDisk Forums and a few individuals seem to have had the same problem - TestDisk searching for MFT but nothing happening. There has been no solution from Christophe Grenier the author.

"I basically did what you have suggested.
I went to ADVANCED, I selected BOOT,I selected REBUILD BS
I got a message "search mft" and the search started.
I did this yesterday. It took 12 hours. At the end, there didn't seem to be any resolution?????"
Can testdisk generate a new ntfs boot sector and backup?" - cgsecurity.org

Anyway, we shall try some more things and take a chance.
As regards the end sector of a partition where backup VBR resides:
Run PW. Right click on Partition D: > Properties. In the popup Window check whether you can get the start sector and end sector

Next, Right click on Partition D: > Change Partition Type ID. Post the screenshot of the Pop up Window. Do not change anything now. Close the Window and quit PW.

OK the end sector of the partition is 1000212479. Check for the backup in that sector. Post a screenshot and save it as VBR1000212479. (Delete the sector map of 1000208385 which is erroneous).

Now run TestDisk. On screen 5, [Boot] is highlighted . Move it to [Type] and press enter key. Post the screen that comes up. I can't predict what it will be and so we shall go step by step deciding upon what we see.

Selecting in the list doesn't seem to actually do anything. When I press enter I get a prompt to enter the new disk type. I manually entered 07 and pressed enter

It returned back to this screen

Btw. I noticed this comment when highlighting "Type":

You got back to the screen highlighting [Boot] . Move the highlight to
[List] - Enter. Post the screen.
Note: No need to bother about the comment. If we have made any change, that change will last only during the present session. When TestDisk is closed that change is lost and it goes back to the original state. For example if now you can List the files, you have to copy it to another drive during this session. If you close TestDisk you won't see the files again. You will have to run TestDisk again and make the change to list the files.

There is no light at the end of the tunnel.

One last thing and then we give up.

Select your D: drive in Bootice.Go to Sector 2048. Pull the Mouse pointer diagonally across the map to select all 512 fields, right Click > Fill selection > 0x00 > OK to zero all fields. On the top Menu bar click on Save changes icon to write it to the disk. You have zeroed sector 2048.

    Next zero sector 1000212479 also.

Run TestDisk. When screen 6 shows both boot sector and backup boot sector bad, invoke [Rebuild BS]

    If successful well and good.

If not, end of the story. I have no more arrows in my quiver.

As already indicated in Can testdisk generate a new ntfs boot sector and backup?" - cgsecurity.org the "searching MFT" problem does not seem to have a resolution.

Perhaps you may need to turn to Professional Data Recovery. In such an event, you may restore sector 2048 and 1000212479 from the backups.
