USB Port stops & starts working - and no logs

    Hi all,

    My System is ...
    - Lenovo T14 Notbook
    - Windows 10 Pro 20H2

I have two USB ports on the Notebook and one has a problem that I don't understand.
When I do have a USB memory stick connected it stops working - without any warning or anything else (just that sound like manually unplugging the stick).
After some time (usually in the range of seconds) it starts working again - I hear the nice sound about a new device and the Explorer windows with the new connected drive.

It happens only on the one USB Port.
It happens not only with one specific USB memory drive but others as well.

How can I find the cause of that problem?
    - Windows update tells me: You're up to date.
    - In the device manager I can't see any problematic device (with yellow exclamation mark)
    - When the device is "not working" I do not see the "USB Mass Storage Device" in the USB controllers tree in the device manager

I was thinking about the Event viewer to see what s going on.
But in the sub tree "Hardware Events" I don't see anything - but there is where I do expect more information.

What can I do to get more information and how to fix it.

    KR,
    Max

Are the USB ports version 2 or 3, or 1 of each? Does it happen with both ports and the same devices in each? Have the Power Options been set to turn off the ports? Does one port feel different from the other when plugging in [have run into a looseness in a couple machines that were losing contact]?

As I would see both are version 3.

It happen only with the one port.
It happens as well with different devices.

I haven't changed this - where would I do so.
    (I guess no).

No. Both feel the same (don't think that loosing contact would be like that.)

If needing both ports at the same time I have a small 4 port plugin hub.
    usb hub at DuckDuckGo

    - I want to fix the issue and don't want to find a workaround.

It appears to me to be a hardware issue and the only solution to such is a new motherboard as the ports are not easily replaced.

    go to device manager
go to universal serial bus controllers
it might be ie generic superspeed usb hub properties
it will have power management in there
untick allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
it work for me, was having same problem as you

While in Device Management notice whether 2 words exist under USB, one is Enhanced and the other is eXtensible. The first is USB 2 Full Speed and the second is USB 3 SuperSpeed, haven't worked with versions newer than those yet. SuperSpeed usually has SS on the trident marked near the port.

Without seeing any log entries - how can I know.

Thanks - I think that is the point.
I plugged in one UBS memory stick and then went trouh all entries in the "USB controllers" tree.
And disabled everywhere the tickbox "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" (This seems to be the default).

no the problem seems to be gone.
I could now find which is the real affecting entry by doing it only on one after each other.
Still I would be interessted in where to find system log entries for switching it on/off.

And still ... What is causing the issue :-/
