Hi ignatzatsonic,
I'm not explaining myself well but agree with what you write.
I too would not use a system image for all/critical data backup, actual back ups that's the must have.
Until recently, SR, as far as I'm aware, never failed me over the years, by that I mean in my head SR was always there in an emergency. I was able to create SRPs and only used them as when and never had an issue getting my machine back up and running, it was never perfect but go me out of trouble.
It's only since,( again as far as I am aware), I installed 20H2 I found I had issues with SR, maybe I'd been lucky, maybe there had been issues in the past and hadn't known it, not that it would have matter to much, as for many years I have kept a back up of data x 2.
The issue there of course is, back ups are only as good as their upkeeping. SR was/is an instant, convenient fix for the most part with little or no data/application loss unless of course the HDD was screwed / so corrupted, you couldn't get to SR by one means or another.
