Questions about USB, hubs, and Logitech wireless.

Is there a way to identify a particular hardware, to which USB hub it is connected to?

The motherboard, is an [ASRock B360 Pro4] MB with USB 2, and 3 ports which are are not being used so that I can resolve the USB problem once and for all. The computer case is a superb heavy duty (but older model) Antec mid tower, I decided not keep the case and elected to add a 5.25" front panel with USB 2, and 3. Amazon.ca .

There is a problem with the Logitech 270 keyboard, which is a basic USB wireless keyboard from Logitech, and is not a "Unifying" keyboard.

I am using a generic mouse which does not interfere or being interfered with, but must keep switching the dongle socket of the keyboard, when I am encountering problems, although it's not a permanent solution. I also have no generic USB keyboards to compare with.

You can upload here your screenshot of the USB Controllers in Device Manager? Usually 2 USB ports have single USB Root Hubs. But I don't know what the ports are.

As to the Hub, I would use one of 2 products, one is a self-powered USB 2 hub which needs only 1 port on the motherboard and provides 2 or more USB ports. Could also use a USB 3 version. The device I have taken to adding to gain more USB 3 ports is a PCIe x1/x4 card that provides 4 ports at the rear of the case and the front panel adapters. Only issue with USB now is the type C that is becoming more prevalent. My cases are older, newest if 5 years ago.

In Device Manager and the USB section 2 words are important to see, one is Enhanced for USB 2 High Speed support and the other is eXtensible for USB 3 SS/SuperSpeed support.

Not all USB 2 devices work in USB 3 ports even though 3 is backwards compatible, most times it is printers that cause issues for my clients so best to use what they call for, usually USB 2. USB 2 and USB 3 cables are not interchangeable, have different plugs on the device end.

Thanks for the responses and attached are the screenshots of the device manager and Nirsoft's USBView, from which I uninstalled the non-existent devices.

    • There are two USB 3 sources, but only the front end device is being used and there is nothing connected to the motherboard USB sockets.
    • Currently, the generic mouse is plugged into a USB2.0 and the keyboard dongle is inserted into USB 3.1. I will reverse the dongles to improve the keyboard reaction, but I've done this before, and it worked for awhile and then a typed character takes 5 seconds to appear.

Here are two screenshots of Nirsoft's USBView. One shows the values when the kybd (#0005) is connected to USB 3. In the second, the kybd is connected to USB 2.0.
The values show up only when a dongle is disconnected. I uninstalled the unused connections, and then reversed dongles, and disconnected them again. The positions changed but the values are identical.

I have the Logitech K800 Wireless Illuminated keyboard, which does use a Unifying receiver. I got the same exact problem as you, suddenly all keystrokes were getting delayed by several seconds. The solution was to remove other USB devices so that the total current drawn from each internal hub no longer was exceeding the maximum limit. Use an externally powered USB hub as a workaround if you need to use more USB devices at once.

Thanks for the reply. You are the 2nd person to point this out. I will have to look into it. Because this issue exists in Linux as well though not as severe.

Guess I lost the post written earlier. Thanks for the link. I only have two USB devices connected, the kybd and the mouse and two hubs. I connected one to each hub, and so far it works smoothly. So, I'll wait and see.
