Windows intermittently shuts down after entering Sleep Mode

    Hi all,

Recently over the past few weeks my computer hasn't been able to enter sleep mode properly. I've got a bit of a strange PC build, which I'm sure is partly to blame, but seen as the problem is only fairly recent I'm not sure how to diagnose or begin to find out what's causing it. My computer has a top end 2012 motherboard and overclocked CPU (i5 Ivy Bridge), but with a very recent 5600 XT Graphics Card.

The problem: I enter sleep mode through the start menu, the computer displays go to sleep as normal - but then the computer still remains humming (all fans, lights, etc) as if it's ignoring the command or something is preventing it. About several minutes later the computer decides to shut down; and there is nothing I can do whilst it is in this state to wake it back up.

I've tried a lot of solutions some with success and some without, but like the title of this post says this problem is very intermittent. There is occasionally times I can sleep the computer and nothing happens, but the problem is that there's no real pattern to differentiate the times it sleeps from the time it doesn't (e.g. certain programs open, etc). At first I entered the advanced power settings and changed a lot of the options in there, multimedia sleeping, processor state, and more (I've tried almost everything here), which I thought succeeded when I changed the multimedia options: eventually to no avail. Next I updated my display drivers, something I'd not done in a while, which worked for a single sleep before reverting back to shutting down. I still think the problem could be display driver related hence the Frankenstein PC build, but like I said problems have only arisen very recently.

Now in event viewer these shut downs are in fact logged as a 6008; and my computer is completely up to date as far as I know, my Windows OS Build being 19042.964. I hope this info will help.

You wrote you have a very recent 5600 XT Graphics Card.

Did the problem began after the Graphics Card upgrade?

Do you have a hardware monitor with temperature monitor?

The graphics card has been in long before the problem began. It's possible that it's a recent driver version that's caused these problems - I used AMD's auto detect feature on the client to get the version I'm on right now.

In regards to temperatures, everything seems to be totally normal: CPU Idles at about 35-42 degrees, and the GPU is idling at about 50-60 degrees or so.

As a side note, If it makes any difference, I use AI Suite 3 to do my fan curves which I had to jump through hoops to install onto this older version of the motherboard.

Is any of this info useful?

    Lets do the basic

    - Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart

Back to windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    sfc /scannow

If it find any corrupted file, restart and do it again.

Back to windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Sleep problems are often caused by display driver problems. I suggest that you get another copy of the driver and install it again.
    - You could always try reinstalling an earlier driver version that you know worked and delay updating to the latest driver.

Thanks for these responses. I ran an sfc /scannow command and it found some errors after the chkdsk, and I did this until it found none. This didn't immediately have an effect on the sleeping however, but it's always good to do.

I've also now done a clean wipe of my AMD driver and installed a version I know I initially had back in 2020 - so far so good, but I'll hang fire until something happens again. I'll try to report back here if it persists, but I'll make sure to comment if I've had no problems at all after a week. Thanks guys!

So there's been some developments - the shutting down has actually continued, despite my video card driver efforts. However today some thing different happened, I blue screened! I suspect this was something to do with my display driver because the bluescreen was in a very low resolution and disabled one of my monitors too. The chronological errors in event viewer include:

Event 875: "The description for Event ID 875 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    aksdf.sys

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

(And again): But with the 'Hardlock service'

Event 7000: "The aksdf service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading"
(And again) "The Hardlock service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading"

There's also a detailed bug report here.

It says driver errors / clashing but you'll be able to make a lot more sense of it than I can - at this point I'm positive it's video card driver related. Let me know what you guys think of this!

    Have you considered analysing with
Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer
    - I have never used it but another member has just used it to solve a headache that has been going on for ages.

I used it, it's great! Download/install WhoCrashed. Make it so your PC crashes, load up windows then open the WhoCrashes program click Analyze--> click Dumps file tab, sort by date/time. It will tell you what Drivers caused the crash.

I thought I responded to this thread a while ago - apologies. The problems are still persisting. The crashes are being caused by ntoskrnl.exe, and I've tried a variety of solutions that are apparently linked with this:

    - Reinstalling GPU drivers fresh (using AMD gpu driver clean install facility) and rolling them back several times
    - Resetting BIOS to remove Overclocking
    - SFC scannow
    - CHKDSK
    - Defrag
    - Registry cleaning
    - Fresh install of Windows 10

None have succeeded. I have a link to the actual dump files here if anyone could help with a more detailed breakdown:

Sunspitter dump files.zip - Google Drive
