    Hello @dalchina,

The puzzle remains- how is it derived? Guess we'll never know..

Even when I looked through the files in the installation folder and the Original CD folder. . .

    • DPInst - XML Document
    • hpusbscn.sys - System File
    • hpxp3800 - Setup Information

. . . I couldn't find that exact wording and case, but, I might have another look at those. This does lead me to believe [ like you suggested ] that it is somehow collated rather than set as a constant for example.

It is obviously held on the OS somewhere for it to show, but the trick is, where and how to change it. I know it is only aesthetics [ and my OCD ] because it works, but it would be nice to get to the bottom of it.

Further information that I have discovered is that because it is classed and shown as a Device, it appears in the Devices section of Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & Other Devices as well as the Printers & Scanners section.

When the Scanner USB is disconnected it disappears from the Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & Other Devices section, but is obviously left in the Printers & Scanners section. So this proves that the Scanner Name is extracted from wherever the Scanner Name is extracted from in the Printers & Scanners section.

There has got to be an entry that can be changed somewhere surely, or am I being silly!

Hi, I have some bluetooth headphones (bought over a year ago for travelling -ha!) not connected but shown in Devices and Printers.

There are numerous occurrences of their name in various keys with designation 'Friendly name'. I tried changing each in turn and refreshing Devices and Printers.

4 keys could not be changed.

Now it may also be that refreshing Devices and Printers may be inadequate- might need to restart explorer or log off/on.

    Just a thought...

Did it change the Device Name though?

I actually Restarted, but unfortunately to NO avail.

The thing is, in the Registry, there are a LOT of STRINGS, any of which could be the one that needs changing, but it would be a nightmare to try and physically track this down as there are also numerous different Registry Keys involved.

I think I will just have to accept this and leave it as it is!

Sorry, should have specifically stated no change observed. Hence my comment about refresh not being enough.

Yes, have to abandon quest unless you happen on just the right search result I think... strange how printers are treated differently.

I agree. You would think it would simply be a Registry change.

Oh well, thank you for your time, effort, and input on this, it is very much appreciated. I will mark this as Solved [ well sort of ].

When I first started using Win10 my HP Officejet would periodically go stupid and windows would report no printer found. I’ve found the best way to fix this is install the printer using HP software and then let the HP software manage it rather than windows. No issues since. That said I’ve just accepted the default names

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have already tried with Letting and NOT Letting Windows Manage My default Printer, neither of which made a difference.
