    Formatting Hard Drive in External Enclosure


    Hello All

    Wanted to format a Hard drive in external enclosure, and swap out a very old drive in Mom's Desktop machine, ((No room for SSD in that system unforuately, Older HP P6-2133W AMD A6-3620 Desktop)

    Anyways dummy me started the task on Secondary Gaming Laptop PC, so far 38 percent, approximately how long will it take to finish Formatting a 1TB drive lol

    Guess if not done by time ready to sleep later, i'll just stay up til done, then shutdown Laptop, then transfer the backed up files to another drive tomorrow morning, no idea if i'll get it all done tonight or not.

    ((less than year old WD black 1TB in the External Enclosure) Might replace her 3 year old Toshiba Internal with this drive possibly

    The specs on this machine at HP P6-2133W AMD A6-3620 Desktop https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c03183981 state that the OEM 1TB HDD is on a SATA cable, so I don't understand your "No room for SSD in that system." What am I missing?

    Well it mounts like facing downward in the 3.5 inch bay in that system, i'd have to order a newer 3.5 inch bay adapter for the spare Samsung 860 Evo 250gb i do have in the box,

    Main Gaming Desktop ran out of Sata plugs to power it in additon to my Samsung 860 Evo 1tb Sata SSD

    I guess i could keep the current Toshiba drive in hers for now, obtain the 2.5 inch to 3.5inch adapter, place the SSD on that, and hopefully all works fine, ((though then i formatted this WD Black 1TB in External enclosure for nothing lol))

    Except she'd have no room for more storage type drive as way it's mounted, in that system i don't see a way to mount both the SSD and Storage drive like i do for my Main Gaming Desktop

    Those adapters cost nearly nothing, fortunately, and installation is a breeze. Have you considered giving Mom an SSD as the internal and connecting an external (newer) HDD permanently for storage? If she has a USB 3 or better out and the external connects with USB 3 or better, she'll probably enjoy the SSD speed and accept the slight lag with the external HDD. It's not like she'll be gaming from the external.

    (That site linked above says she's got 4 USB 3.0 ports.)

    Yeah i could look into that actually, ok will get the adapter, give her first SSD, and obtain a newer External for other file storage, not like she stores that much either, unlike Me with my 2 Gaming Systems, and all the media files and such.

    Now if Laptop would format my external a bit faster lol, but thats what i get for selecting Full Format eariler lol, oh well when its done, it's done lol, not much i can do now, but let it finish, hopefully done by 2am, as usual bed time there lol

    I knew i should've done the task with 8 Core Desktop lol, but 4 Core Laptop i was on eariler, and was like guess use this one to do the task i was like then lol.

    About 55 percent done now, so maybe will be done by 2-2:30am lol

    When you choose a Full Format as opposed to a Quick Format, it will look at every sector of the drive looking for Bad Sectors. If it finds them; then it will mark that sector as "Bad" and tell Windows to now use this sector. A Full Format on a Healthy drive should just take a couple of hours at most. If you have a lot of Bad Sectors, it will get stuck at a certain point for a long period of time. If this happens, you might as well just cancel the Format and replace the drive because it has too many Bad Sectors to be usable. If you want a second opinion, you can download DiskGenius from my signature and select your drive then go to the toolbar to Disk/View or Repair Bad Sectors/Verify Now. this will take a long time too. If all of the boxes are light Blue, then the drive is healthy, if any of the boxes are Amber or RED, then no need to finish the test, the drive needs to be replaced.

    Yeah it took more than few hours on that Secondary Gaming Laptop, did finally finish, but nearly 2:20am, Started at around 11am the day i posted this topic.

    Will check with Disk Genius later on tonight with Main Gaming Desktop, it's a 1TB Western Digital Drive in USB 3.0 Enclosure
