    Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" RMA

    Greetings All,

I'm in the process of a Samsung RMA for a 2.5" EVO 500Gb.

If the machine is left for a period of 24Hrs the drive will eventually vanish crashing the pc and restarting to report no boot device. The bios shows no drive. Only a power cycle makes the drive re-appear and all is well for another up to 24Hrs.

This behaviour is the same across 3 different desktops each time with a clean install of 10 to test. It took me a few days to eliminate all other components in disbeleif that I could have a faulty Samsung SSD.

I install Kingston, WD, Crucial & Samsung but consider Samsung to be the best.

The drive has been sent to Samsung and returned under RMA. In the returning documentation the only points mentioned are device adjusted according to specification and software update. I had already checked for firmware with magician which reported the drive was already up to date.

Upon testing the SSD it still does this vanishing act when left for a long period of time and I have again contacted Samsung with my findings. I have received a reply stating that I need to submit evidence of the fault and all was good in testing at their end in the Netherlands.

I'd agree that the drive would pass all testing in a diagnostic. It is only when the drive is left for a long peiod of time that the fault occurs and when it does there is no evidence that it has. There is no time for a bsod report.

I'm wondering if I should just bin the drive and move on. The original target pc now has a WD blue SSD with no problems.

If it's under warranty get a new replacement one -- I've had the 860 for ages and it's still working perfectly - one of these is in a server running 24/7 and has the OS installed on it. In general SAMSUNG stuff is usually pretty good.

    Cheers

    Confusion:

Has it already been sent to Samsung, or are you still contemplating?

    Or?

I have heard both good and bad about major drive manufacturer's RMA practices (including Samsung) and wonder if you are prepared for some frustration and attempts to put you off?

On 3 desktop computer the samsung has a problem. If you can't get a new one, you can try putting it in an ssd box to use it as an external ssd.

Do you have any reason to believe Samsung did anything at all to "correct" the problem other than perhaps wipe it?

It has the same problems it had before....I don't know how you could have confidence in it.

Do you have any reason to think you can now talk Samsung into giving you an entirely different drive?

    You state:

"The drive has been sent to Samsung and returned under RMA. In the returning documentation the only points mentioned are device adjusted according to specification and software update. I had already checked for firmware with magician which reported the drive was already up to date. I have received a reply stating that I need to submit evidence of the fault and all was good in testing at their end in the Netherlands."

I take that to mean that their "software update" resulted in the same firmware it had when you sent it in. And I assume you have no idea what they would accept as "evidence of the fault".

I'd throw it in the trash.....rather than endure the frustration of trying to pursue a new drive when it's clear they are resisting and can simply claim you supplied no evidence.

But that's me. Maybe your tolerance for frustration is a lot higher than mine. Maybe you can come up with "evidence of the fault". Maybe you are willing to jump through a lot of hoops to have even a remote chance of saving X dollars.

I threw a virtually unused $100 dollar mechanical keyboard into the trash rather than endure customer service, but maybe that's being outlandish. I haven't checked.

Are you willing to engage in a Facebook/Instagram type campaign against the Samsung warranty department? I know someone who had an intermittent but very serious transmission problem with a near new $32,000 SUV. The dealer could not replicate the problem in the shop.

She waged a campaign and had a $28,000 check in her hands within 72 hours. The manufacturer bought the SUV back from her.

Western Digital is known to resist claims by contending your drive's serial number is not in their database and therefore not covered by the standard warranty.....claiming your drive is OEM not retail.

Did all three PC's use a different internal sata cable or did you share it across all three, Have you tried another cable (probably not this but best to check all angles), Is it always around 24 hours or more like 8 ect? Does your event viewer show windows starting up ex day then rebooting with a log added that previous shutdown was not intended. Did you send a picture to samsung with it showing no drive in the bios with the wires in the picture? Did you yourself use SEATOOLS for windows to diagnose your drive vs magician?

All 3 machines used different sata cables.
Event viewer only shows last shutdown was unexpected.
Pictures of everything sent to Samsung except the money shot. Contemplating taking out the motherboard and doing another 24hrs just to get everything in shot
Only magician was used although i still have the ssd here at the moment.

If you use seatools it might fail on an extended test.
