Hey hdmi, You are a god (or goddess) Yours is the ONLY solution that worked to override the MS drivers with intel drivers. But I have these cautions for anyone who decides to try this.The instructions are slightly convaluted.
1. make darn sure you use the correct modded driver for your chipset.
2.You MUST import the winraid.ca certificate using one of several methods provided before installing the new drivers. (link for instructions included)
3. make a full system backup before attempting. On my machine system restore has never worked correctly so I never depend on it any more since sometime it works and sometimes it doesn't.
4. the first time I did it, my usb3 speeds dropped instead of increased. I found it to be because I was also running the MS chipset driver. I had to restore from backup, then install the chipset driver from Dell. (which ironically will install. It just gives you a warning that you are installing an older driver) Quite possibly here, I might could have rolled back the 3 usb3 modded drivers before updating the chipset but I didn't take the chance.
5. after I installed the chipset from Dell and the modded usb3 drivers everything works as expected.
I will bet a dollar to a donut that the first major Windows 10 version change will undo this and I'll have to do it again. It's a shame MS will not let us control what drivers we use without all these workarounds. Thanks again, hdmi.

Hi, sorry for raising this from the dead, but I am having exact same problem you have had with Intel extensible USB host and then some...
My problem is that when I remove a device from one of several certain ports, (3,4,5,7+12) those ports then become useless, unless i reset the entire Intel host device (using UsbTreeView tool). What i don't get is the other USB 2.0 hub host controllers appearing, but do nothing...? (nothing i plug in appears under either Generic USB hub host controller ?). Most of the other ports seem to operate ok.
Every device i plug in, will appear only under the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller". Some devices do, some dont ?
If i was to plug in a USB device thats 3.0 , it appears way at the end of the port list. (13-21)
If i was to plug in USB devices in ports (3,4,5,7+12) and then restart the host controller, they get recognised. But when i safely remove them, the port simply keels over and does not work again until the Host controller is reset. I can even reboot leaving them in and they stay recognised after bootup, but again removing them, causes the port to fail once again.

Have tried just about every variant of driver without success. Presently using the WinRaid driver, but all it does differently is remove the yellow exclamation mark....nothing else.
Here is a short clip showing what happens when I pull out the USB devices from ports (3,4,5,7+12)....
** ignore the Renesas Host Controllers, they are temp add-in cards to give me usable USB's.
** ignore the ASMedia Host Controller, it is motherboard chip and works perfectly fine.
...one other weird thing that happened after upgrading Windows 10, i no longer have onboard audio ? and the VIA VL805 USB controller chip , are not visible in device manager.... losing me audio and 4 USB ports...!

Hey xlr8r,I was right in my assessment that once the next version of Windows 10 was released that my mess would be right back. 21H1 removed my hard won intel drivers and put me right back on Microsoft drivers. Instead of fighting the battle again, I did what you did and installed a Renesas usb 3.0 add on card for my 3.0 devices..
Your case is somewhat different than mine. To get back functionality of your ports I would try this:
1. unplug all usb devices except KB and mouse in Renesas ports.
2. Remove all non present devices. There are several ways to do this, all listed here. Cleanup orphan/hidden devicesThere's a script file there which I'm sure will work, but I just manually removed mine.
3. I think you are then going to have to remove all the USB host controllers and usb root hubs (2.0 and 3.0) EXCEPT for the Renesas ones. Make sure when you uninstall from device manager that you also select to remove the drivers. Restart and Windows should reinstall the controllers and the hubs using Microsoft drivers. Then see if when you plug in a device it shows up using the correct host controller.
This won't get the intel drivers back but at least should get all your ports working again.

hi, many thanks for the tips and advice. Unfortunately i have ventured down that route (as per your advice) several times and still having no success.
Seems i am stuck with several USB ports on that Intel controller remaining out of useful service. It is so bizarre though, that keeping certain devices plugged into them, allows them to work...?
Im seriously beginning to suspect my motherboard is on the way out, considering this issue along with the audio chip and Via USB on-board chips not being even detected in windows...? My only workaround was to install additional USB cards and a Sound card.
I might just disable the USB controller in the Bios, and just let the add-on cards do the work....
but for now , it seems thats my only option, again thanks for your advice.
xlr8r, You may be right or windows may have its brain scrambled. Before I gave up I would try a couple of other things. I would run SFC, OR if you are running Windows 20h2 like your profile says, update to 21h1. That might get your usb 2.0 ports back. (if you are already on 21h1 an in place non destructive install of 21h1 might also fix usb 2.0 functionality)
As far as your audio, in the back of my mind it seems like I remember that Via audio was one of the drivers Windows would not automatically install and it would always revert back to the default high definition audio driver. When I looked in the MS Update catalog, sure enough there is no Windows 10 Via audio driver. You might try to manually install the Windows 8 Via audio driver version 6.0.1.1061 from here. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...?q=via%20audio
apologies, forgot to mention onboard audio is a Realtek chip, Via is the onboard USB controller chip. neither of these even appear in device manager at all, its like they just dont exist....?
Think I have tried and exhausted every suggestion. Oddly im not seeing 21h1 as an option in Updates...? must look deeper into this. thanks
Realtek onboard sound is no loss.... I use HDMI output for sound. Check bios settings to see if they have been disabled

tried HDMI audio, its crap compared to the THX Soundblaster i have in at present to replace it. (HDMI is disabled in system devices).

Downloading the 21h1 Win10 version now. Somehow I missed the MAY update, i didnt get notified by windows update.
