5 pin cpu fan header and 4 pin connector on the motherboard?

I swapped out the hardware from my dell optiplex 7020 Mt and put them onto a MSI B85-G43 GAMING motherboard everything seems to be working fine and then I figured out the curve ball dell throws at ya.

For the cpu fan connector dell used a 5 pin connector and my msi motherboard has a 4 pin fan header and I'm assuming the cpu fan isn't getting full power so my cpu fan isn't turning.

Haven't had to deal with a 5-pin yet but a 4-pin can be used on a 3-pin on the motherboard, usually indexed so as to leave one of the outer pins unplugged. More pins just means more control.

Dell has been known to use proprietary connectors for one reason or another.

You can try to drill down into Dell manual or technical documents to try to find out what that 5th pin is for.

Otherwise, in my experience there'd be no harm done by experimentation....just see if you can get the fan spinning one way or another, using the 4 pin connector on the new motherboard.

You'd need to confirm you can read fan RPM and that any fan controls in the BIOS work properly. If not, insert the pins on the motherboard connector into a different set of the 5 pins on the cooler connector.

Did you look at the second link in my previous post? I dont know if it is like that for all models, but the OP can look at his and find out easily enough. Simpler just to buy the regular stock intel cooler. cheap as chips.
