    Last two days Brother printer offline on first start up


    Win 10 Pro x64 current. About two to three weeks ago I had a few startups where my keyboard wasn't seen. It had been preceded by the NumLock staying on after shutdown. Replugging the cable to the mobo and rebooting solved it. Since then, no problems, although since then I've changed keyboards (same IBM M model). Now, yesterday and today on first startup, my always-on Brother 2270 printer is being seen as offline. Never happened before. Restarting the printer gets it seen, and then it's seen again if I reboot afterward. I don't know if the two occurrences are related or coincidental, but I'm wondering if this is due to Windows 10 updates -- there was one yesterday -- or a sign of either emerging mobo problems or ...? The mobo is an ASRock Z97 Extreme6 and I've had it since May 2016.

    You do have some options as a start . . .


     System Restore

    Have you got a recent System Restore Point that you could try? => System Restore


    Let us see what you have loading [ Apps/Programs/Services/Utilities/et ] at Startup.

     MSConfig

    [1] Press the Win + R keys together to open the Run dialog box.
    [2] Type msconfig in the Run dialog box > Enter.
    [3] Click the Startup tab.
    [4] Expand the Startup Item and Manufacturer columns so that ALL the data is showing.
    [5] Sort the Startup Item column so that ALL the enabled items are at the top [ click Date Disabled column ] .
    [6] Post a screenshot . . .

    Uninstall and then reinstall the Drivers.

    Hi,

    Printer off line.

    Turn the printer off and unplug.

    Turn your router off for at least a minute or longer.

    Turn your router back on, let it settle and you can connect to the internet.

    Plug in and turn your printer back on, search for your printer either via the printer or PC

    The above may well do it for you.

    ( you may--may have to uninstall/install printer soft/firm ware again ).

    @Paul Black Run can't find Misconfigure and the printer is not in Startup (Task Mgr).

    Yesterday, NumLock stayed on after shutting down. Replugging the cable (back of computer) solved it for the next start up. Printer issue hasn't happened again (yet).

    Leaving the printer aside for the moment, the keyboard has been a problem the past couple of days, as I described in the OP: the keyboard occasionally doesn't work on start up. The conditions of its occurring is either the NumLock stays on after full shutdown, or today for the first time, the NumLock light didn't come on at all. Unplugging and replugging the keyboard from the mobo solves it on next start up each time. To be clear, what the NumLock light does is not the issue per se, but as a symptom of the keyboard apparently not shutting down or starting up with the rest of the system.

    The first thing to try is . . .

    [1] Create a System Restore Point.
    [2] Goto Device Manager and Uninstall the Keyboard.
    [3] Reboot.

    • The Keyboard will get reinstalled on the Reboot.

    [4] Check the Manufacturers website for Updated Drivers.

    Then, if that does NOT work . . .

     SFC and RestoreHealth

    [1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
    [2] Highlight ALL the commands below.

    IMPORTANT:

    • It is recommended when running SFC that Fast Startup is turned OFF [ Turn it back ON when finished ] => How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

    • If SFC finds any ERRORS that it can NOT repair, run SFC again upto 3 more times, Restarting after each to allow any pending actions to be implemented.

    • DISM will initially try and Repair ANY Corrupted or Missing files using the Component Store.
      If this is NOT possible, DISM will use Windows Update. Therefore, Internet access is required.
      If you are NOT connected to the Internet, you will receive a Error: 0x800f081f.

    [3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
    [4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

    • When the above has finished processing . . .

    [6] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Edit > Select All.
    [7] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window again > Edit > Copy.

    • Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

    [8] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
    [9] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    However, if there are STILL SFC ERRORS . . .

    [1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
    [2] Highlight the command below.

    NOTE:

    If you have a Relocated Desktop, then change the %UserProfile% part of the Command below to the actual path of the Relocated Desktop folder.

    [3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
    [4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

    • This will create a SFC_Details.log file on the Desktop.

    I hope it does too, thanks. Since it's intermittent, I'll have to wait and see before taking further steps. The keyboards, old and new (to me), are IBM Model M's from the mid to late 1980s, so updated drivers from the company are no longer an issue. I do, though, wonder among the possibilities if something in a recent Win 10 update set this off, given the many problems MS has had with those the past many months.

    In that case then, before you Uninstall the Keyboard, make SURE that you HAVE the Keyboard Drivers saved somewhere!
