My laptop recognises USB drives OK, but it won't recognise an SD flash card inserted via an adaptor into the same USB slot. My PC will recognise both and it's also running Win10.
Anyone got any ideas, please?

MY PC is running 10.0.19042 Build 19042
The obvious potential issue is that the USB port on the laptop is not connecting properly with the SD card Adaptor
There are always manufacturing tolerances in connectors and sockets, it could be that in this case the tolerances of either the laptop socket or the SD Adaptor plug, or both are causing the connection to not be made, whilst the different connections on the PC allows this
You could try a different SD adaptor, ( try to borrow one from a friend or family member), if it works then purchasing a new adaptor, ( the same as the one that works would be best), should get you up and running.
In the meantime you could connect the PC and laptop by network, (wifi or Cross connected cable, or Bluetooth, and transfer the files that way
Thanks for the reply. There are in fact two USB ports on the laptop, neither of which works, and three on the front of the PC, all of which work. It's not really worth getting a new adapter because i seldom need to read an SD card on the laptop and i can always read it on to my PC and transfer the data using a normal USB drive. But i appreciate the suggestions.
I seem to have resolved this problem myself. I found that the SD card adapter was showing in 'disk management'. I allocated a drive letter to it and it then it was recognised in Explorer.
I don't know why i did not have to go though this procedure with a 'normal' USB drive, but everything seems to be sorted now.
The assigning of a Drive letter should be automatic with any USB "Drive" - Use a lot of these an my system will normally assign the first available Drive letter. In the last few days I have connected a number of different drives , (both Disk Drives and USB Pen Drives), and they have usually been allocated E: which is the first available letter on my system, If I add an additional device it would usually be assigned G: as F:is used
There appears to be a glitch on your system which I have not noticed anywhere else - All I can suggest is to make sure you have backups of your important data just in case the issue escalates in the future
Did you check on Device Manager if there is any yellow alerts of missing drivers?
Yes, before i allocated the USB drive (E:) in disk manager i found the it in device manager. There was no yellow alert and i tried updating the driver. But windows told me i already had the best driver installed.
Barman58 - i too have used hundreds of all sorts of USB drives over decades and never had this particular problem/solution before.
