The external wouldnt work at all and kept making noises as though it was catching somewhere.
After a few days I tried it again just in case I could get the private files off it and return it.
It opened and let me delete 1 folder but then stopped
I tried again a few days later the same thing happened.
The day after it would not do anything.
Went back to it again and managed to format it!
I had tried for days at the beginning and couldnt do anything with it
Strange it all of a sudden recovered.
My question is do I use it again and rely on it?
Advice please
Tear it apart using your favourite tool.
I am truly amazed at the report dalchina, that's some failure rate and I have always rated WD HDs as being very reliable.

Hi,
A cordless, sharp 6 & 10 mm drill bits, 4 holes, for greater peace of mind.
If none of that available, top off, bend arm, scratch and bend each platter, that'll do it too.
My WD USB HDD has been working fine for 12 years.
So is it not enough to hit it with a hammer? I gave it the quick format.
Annoyed that I cant take it back
But it works fine now
But know I wouldn't depend on it in the future.
Thanks for all the advice. Think I was just unlucky.
