Drivers w10 Pro for Samsung 970 Pro NVMe M.2 need drivers install

It appears the OPer is attempting to install a new NVMe SSD & drivers in a PC without Windows installed. Therefore, no ability for the installation of a basic Microsoft NVMe driver nor the ability to use the Samsung Magician utility.

Or am I missing something?

Most likely the drive is being recognized in the Bios

Well the motherboard will see the drive, and thus Windows will see it once the OS is installed. And as stated Windows comes with base drive drivers so that any drive installed is ready for use.

Also remember the BIOS comes before Windows so all that's required is that the drive be installed on the motherboard first. During the OS install Windows will see the board and thus any pertinent hardware/peripherals connected to the board.

In short, once the drive is installed on the board (and provided the BIOS can see it), and even though no OS is installed, Windows will see it one it starts installing.

Lastly, the "NVMe" drivers are NOT required for the drive to work or be seen. They are basically performance enhancing drivers.

If the drive is recognized in the Bios, in the Windows Installer, in Where to Install Windows, it will show the drive, it will not ask for drivers. If the drive is all Unallocated Space, just press the Next button and Windows will create partitions and format them during the install. If it asks for drivers, go back to the Bios to make sure it is recognized.

Ummm.... that's pretty much what I said

And obviously you have to allocate space for the OS. I pretty much thought that part was a given

Yes, of course that makes perfect sense. I must have been fixated on cloning as that was my first experience with an NVMe SSD. Obviously during a clean install there are no drivers present at the start until the installation process gets under way.

The same as any clean install on a new HDD or SSD, sata or NVMe type. The basic Windows drivers get installed as part of the Windows installation.

I know that many users understand this concept, just attempting to make is more obvious for those who aren't that familiar.

I'm fascinated to see that Windows has installed the same driver file for both a HDD & the NVMe SSD on my laptop.




So, the OPer should be OK to just clean install Windows and not worry about drivers for the NVMe SSD. After they're all finished with the Windows installation, then install the Samsung NVMe Controller driver.

If that NVMe drive is installed on an adapter, that may explain why the NVMe driver can't be installed. I believe the driver is for boards that natively support NVMe drives - m.2 slot ports supporting PCIE drives.
