Cannot install Samsung NVMe driver for NVMe 970 Pro

    Hello,
    Win 10 Pro v: 20H2 b19042-868
    ASUS VivoBook K513EQ, 11th Generation, PCi 3

I installed a Samsung SSD 970 Pro, when I try to install the Samsung_NVM_Express_Driver_3.3 I get the following message: Samsung NVM Express Device is not connected. Connect the device and try again.
Device Manager shows in Storage: Intel RST VMD Controller 9A0B
Magician message: The device is connected to the driver that Magician does not support: Use Samsung NVMe driver.
    With CrystalDiskMark I get 1782 MB/s Read, 1725 MB/s Write, not the 3000+ MB/s that the 970Pro should deliver.
How do I install de Samsung Driver?

Hi E Odio. Welcome to the forum.

    We might need more information.

You say you installed a new Samsung SSD 970 Pro.
Was this in addition to the existing NVMe in the Asus Vivobook (most have them), or is this a second device you installed?

If you added a second device, what was the first device (the one that came with the laptop?)

Can you link to the specs for the Samsung SSD 970 Pro that you bought?

Let's start there and see where this goes!

Open device manager. Is there any yellow alerts of missing drivers?

Expand the Disk drivers tab, right click on the 970 Pro - update the driver - Browse my computer

Additional info for my NVMe 970 Pro no driver issue

    Hello,
    Thanks for your replies.

    Here is the requested information:

The original NVMe was a Western Digital PC SN530 256GB SSD.
I changed it for the 970 Pro double the size and was supposed to be faster.

Specs for NVMe 970 Pro: FORM FACTOR. M.2 (2280) INTERFACE. PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3. Max 8.0 g. STORAGE MEMORY. Samsung V-NAND 2-bit MLC. CONTROLLER. Samsung Phoenix Controller. CACHE MEMORY. 512MB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM (512GB)

I have a second device for data: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 2TB

In Device Manager \ Storage Controller only shows Intel RST VMD Controller and Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller.

In Device Manager \ Disk Drives, when I try to update The NVMe Samsung SSD 970 PRO 512GB driver, the only options look for a .inf file. The Samsung driver I have been able to find is the msi Samsung970ProInstaller64.msi, and it does not install; if I try to install the Samsung_NVM_Express_Driver_3.3.exe I get the message: "Samsung NVM Express Device is not connected. Connect the device and try again"

    SO, I am stuck

Next I would boot into BIOS settings. Look for the disk drives listed. Note any inconsistencies.
Go through the settings to see if there is anything to set related to NVMe. Not the options and let us know here.
However, laptops don't usually have many settings options.

You need to change the SATA mode to AHCI to install Samsung driver, boot in Safemode, go to BIOS and change SATA mode to AHCI, reboot and install Samsung driver.

That's wrong because the NVMe Controller drivers (which is what the OP is trying to install) do NOT show up under "Disk drives", they show up under "Storage Controllers"....
Cannot install Samsung NVMe driver for NVMe 970 Pro-samsung-storage-controller-drivers.jpg

Further confirmation can be seen in the "NVMe Driver Installation Guide" (downloaded here) where on page 8 in "3. Confirming the installed driver" it tells you to look at the "storage controllers" section.

What the Disk drives "drivers" are for is to allow Windows to any disk installed on to a PC, and also to at least allow a disk drive to function, and have an OS installed (if need). This is why those are "Microsoft" drivers.

As to why the OP can't install the drivers, that's a mystery. My only guess is the drive is not supported on that notebook, but that's strictly a "guess".

    Thanks sygnus21 for the information.
I have a M.2 SM951 drive and I thought that a NVMe will be the same.
But the procedure is the same to update the driver.

NVMe drives don't use SATA, they use PCI express lanes, thus the above would not apply. Also, I'm 99.999.9 percent sure that if the laptop came with Windows 10 installed the BIOS is already set to AHCI (not that it matters).

    No problem, and thanks

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the same applies all NVMe drives, including your Samsung? SM951. However, it looks like you have yours connected to a SCSI adapter? Wondering why you don't have a "Storage controller" section listed in Device Manager???
