Laptop won't recognize IDE drive connected through USB adapter

I'm trying to recover pictures and files from an old PC drive.
    Maxtor model number 4D080H4
    Maxtor D540X-4D 5400 RPM
    80GB Ultra ATA / 100

Bought a Unitek Y-3324 - USB 3.0 to IDE+SATA Adapter to connect it to my laptop, but the D: and E: drives that show up on Explorer don't connect. The drive sounds fine, but it bogs Explorer down (not responding sometimes) and then I get this error.

    WinVer 1909 OS build 18363.1379

Were there two partitions on the IDE disk?

Try using the power adapter even if the disk is 2.5inch [the unit has a power on/off switch as well]
My reading of the 3.5 inch power arrangements is that you need to use the power cable, the power adapter & the power switch.

[All I know about this item is what was shown at SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 Adapter, UNITEK IDE Hard Drive Adapter for Universal 2.5"/3.5" Inch IDE and SATA External HDD/SSD with 12V 2A Power Adapter, Support 10TB - Newegg.com]
