No, the quick format did not change anything. What about "Reset to standard values"? Yes, the blue light is on (the disk is now connected to "my" PC again) but with a constant light which indicates no activity.

I had to abort the slow formatting as it seemed to take for ever...

Oh, sorry I missed one message from you. No, the Seagate was not connected wen the forced shut down took pace...

I just connected the Verbatim which is also gone from Explorer, but the USB stick is still there...

    1. Connect an external USB drive that worked on the good PC to this PC.
    2. From Device Manager, right click on the Disk 1 which should correspond to the external USB drive you connect, then assign a drive letter.
    3. Open a fresh new File Explorer and see if that driver letter you assigned in step two is now there.

Perhaps I need to restart my PC...
Steve, what time are on line tomorrow?

My wife is now calling me to show up in the kitchen for dinner. I also feel that I have had enough for today and really need to rest before starting again tomorrow. My local time is now 8:05 PM local Swedish time.
I wish I could invite you to dinner after all you have done for me today. A very warm thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Best regards,

    Good morning Steve,
After a very long day yesterday I had to take a real brake and clear my mind as I suddenly realised that I was confusing myself. Therefore I want to clarify a couple of things so that it also becomes clear to you in our further fight with my problem.
    1. I said that I had a back-up of my system. Wrong – that was before I formatted the Seagate.
    2. I said that now the Verbatim has also disappeared from the explorer. It disappeared at the same time as the Seagate and the LaCie.
Before I became a member here, I was searching the web for relevant information about USD ports disappearing from the explorer. I came across a case about a person who encountered the same problem after changing from one AV to another (he finally replaced Avira with Avast). He was running a program called Winaero Tweaker and could see that Removable Drives were marked. This guy was quite experienced with computers and he got the problem after testing different AV programs. But he continued searching and he found a setting which was left after uninstalling Avira, (Enable device protection) with a cross mark which he unmarked (se attachment, don’t know how to change the file format, it is a Windows key + shift + s screen copy). After that USB drives worked again.
I don’t know if this solution in any way is relevant in my case, but perhaps it gives another clue. I have no idea as how to find a setting which controls this function. I never had Avira on my PC.

    Hello George,
.docx files are a security hazard as I mentioned yesterday, so please don't post them as I will not open them. Post a text file instead.

Did you follow the tutorial to assign a drive letter via Disk Management yesterday?

Third party antivirus are not required - I would uninstall them and just use Windows Defender, along with installing Malwarebytes Free version to do an occasional scan.

Windows Defender works just fine on all my PCs and many other people rely on it. AV makers want you to use their products so they can make money and spam you.

If you want to share your document as a PDF file, I will accept that. Otherwise preferred if you just post a web link.

Hi Steve, you are an early bird...
Right now I only use Windows Defender and it got top scores (18 points) in the German AV-Test's latest test so I see no reason to reinstall Bitdefender Plus.

Yes, you told me yesterday about the docx. files. I apologize for not following your warning as I did not quite understand the meaning. If I want to send a screen shot, how can I do that as a text file?

No, I have not yet tried to assign a drive letter. I will soon do that. Another not computer related issue suddenly came up which I had to handle first.

To send a word document means it has to be converted to PDF then? I don't have a program to do that...

This is the link to the forum the guy was on.
