USB disconnect sound
I get periodic USB disconnect sounds, but I have no idea what's disconnecting. Is there a way to find out?
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19042)

Hi one way to find out which usb device is disconnecting is remove one device at a time till you find the one that disconnecting. how many usb devices you have connected? do you hear a reconnect sound also?
Keyboard, mouse, USB HDD. Since the mouse and keyboard don't seem to be affected, I suspect the HDD. I will disconnect it and see if that solves the problem.
There is no reconnect sound, just disconnect.

I did what you suggested. It is definitely the USB HDD. When I rebooted this morning, Macrium Reflect started a backup to the HDD, and I heard USB disconnect sounds almost continuously -- about once a second. The Macrium backup failed with "Backup aborted! - Write operation failed - The device is not ready."
I connected the drive to a different USB port on the same computer, but the disconnect sounds continued.
I moved the drive over to a laptop. There were no USB disconnect sounds. I was able to run a full Macrium Reflect backup on the laptop with no problems. Right now, I am running a SMART test on the backup, but it's taking forever.
Could it be a problem with USB? Or an out-of-date driver? I'm embarassed to say that I have no idea how to check for a driver update. This is an 8TB Western Digital Elements desktop drive.
what bios do you have on it? latest one is A14 if you have older i would update the bios and download and install the chipset driver after that . Support for XPS 8700 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US
hi not that risky these days i would do it. just do dont do anything on computer when it is updating shouldn't take that long to do.
Thanks, I'll try it.
Meanwhile, I connected a 4TB drive (also Western Digital) to the same USB port and started a full Macrium backup. I haven't gotten any USB disconnect tones, and the backup is running just fine. Does this suggest that problem is with the (8TB) drive? If the drive is the problem, I may be able to get a replacement, since it's still under warranty.
that could very well be but it did work on the laptop. but maybe the cord is faulty and cord was in a different position by the laptop.
