    Drive replacement

This is an old notebook computer has a failing drive.

    Sea Tools long generic fail.

    Windows version 10.0.18363

HP link only has tested drivers for Windows 8.0:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...90?sku=C2H77UA

    RAM & SSD Upgrades | hp - compaq | Pavilion dv7t-7 Series | Crucial.com

The computer came with these two disk drives: 750 GB and 8 GB SSD
The 8 GB drive may be flash cache.

The computer is only used to play DVDs on the computer and at times on a TV using a HDMI cable.

The files on the drive include windows, cyberlink.

What are inexpensive options to continue using the notebook as a DVD player?
Does the 8GB SSD / flash cache drive interfere with options?

Where would a new drive be located form factor for SSD)?
Either SSD or HD in the HD bay?

Use that Crucial website to also find an SSD to replace w/e is in there.

Double check the result, to make sure they are mechanically compatible.
Like... open the computer and check the connector type/size/etc on the drive that's in there.
Make sure the Crucila replacement has the same connector.

I believe the 8Gb and the 750GB are actually one drive... physically.

Well you said the drive is failing...so you will have to replace it. You can get a 250GB SSD to replace it.
And Crucial SSD's are really cheap.
500GB 2.5" SSD is like $40 (assuming the drive in the comp is 2.5")

I'd use macrium to image the main drive and replace with an SSD. Is this your laptop? HP Pavillion DV7 Hard Drive Removal Upgrade - YouTube

Yeah, it "looks" like a 2.5" drive.

On PCPartpicker I see the cheapest 2.5" 250GB hard drive is like $25.00, and the cheapest 2.5" 240GB SSDs are like $26.00

    There are 2 disk drives.
See inserts in the opening post.

The Liteon disk drive is without problems and is 8 GB.
The Hitachi is a failed drive and is 750 GB.

This post was typed from the problematic computer (drive still working).

The disk drive is 95% free: only windows and cyberlink.
(HD software: sea tools, hd tune, crystal disk, etc. were installed for the thread.)

So could use a 50 or 100 GB SSD if it fits in place of the 750 GB HD or 8 GB SSD.

A few years ago, there were a lot of what they called SSHD drives. They were a hard drive with a teeny SSD... inside the hard drive.
Check the video @Fabler2 posted at about 2:00. It looks like ONE physical 2.5" drive.

I'm pretty sure any of these drives will work... but like I said... pull the old one out first, and double check the size.

Choose Storage - PCPartPicker <------------------------ spinners and SSDs (sorted 240GB to 256GB)
Choose Storage - PCPartPicker <--------------------------- spinners and SSDs (sorted 100Gb to 146GB)

Whatever you decide make an image now of the failing drive. If it's only used as a glorified DVD player then why not replace with another 'spinner' (cheaper than SSD) and restore the image to it keeping your DVD player software.

The computer was upgraded to widows 10 so Microsoft servers should activate after a clean install.

Opened the back > there were 2 HD bays (one empty) > the Liteon SSD was not in view.

I've not yet replaced a HD with a SSD.
Is the same HD cage used with an adapter or is it completely replaced?
