Thanks. I've tried them before. Perhaps last time a year ago. I know I don't want to pay for the service. The free ones are usually limited to the number of pages and it's a messy process. If I want to send a fax I first have to take a picture of it with my phone and upload it and send it like that. I would rather not upload sensitive documents. Plus it was either hit or miss receiving faxes.

I'm really flummoxed by the fact that I cannot use my Internet connection to somehow connect to my possibly soon to purchase all in one printer, scanner, copier, fax machine and send and receive faxes that way without having to utilize a phone jack. Unless your a business I really don't think most people have both cell phones and land lines nowadays though I could certainly be wrong.

I believe that I've used an online fax service. Once. Send only. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a means to receive, but I know nothing about that.

HP makes nice hardware. I have two problems with HP. Both may be subjective:

In my opinion, they were the early leader in ridiculously expensive ink cartridges. (That history, if true, may no longer be relevant.) I no longer use inkjets, so that is of limited relevance.

They appear to drop driver support after too short a period.

It must be possible to make a fax device that can communicate through a net connection to a machine on the telephone network, like my cell phone can do with voice calls. Whether any maker will ever do that, I can't guess.

I doubt that you'd want to pay for a VOIP service just for the fax, but it might work. (Assuming the fax can tolerate a digital connection.)

    phraed,

When I filed away the links I gave you I found some notes from 2010 about eFax behaving badly when trying to cancel accounts. I ended up having no choice but to phone them on an expensive 0870 phone number in order to cancel my monthly billing with them.

So a one page fax to my bank ended up costing me about £12.
