Kindle alternative ? Onyx Boox Note 3 (Android)

    Hi folks

I'm looking for something which is still light and small enough to be reasonably portable but with a bigger screen than a Kindle - yet still has great e-reader capabilities - also supports 14 formats natively. One problem with the smaller kindles is that they really aren't great for PDF books !!

I found this : Onyx Boox Note 3 Hands on Review - Good e-Reader

10 - 11 inch screen, runs android and can connect to Windows machines etc -- small enough to be carried around and can even attach a mouse and great it seems for note taking with decent pen system.

Slightly expensive I know but due to Covid travel and visiting restrictions I saved a slew of money in 2020 !!!! so I thought I'd buy myself a late Xmas prezzie. The note system looks also good when on remote video meetings etc and you need to make notes -- often easier than fiddling with ballpoint and paper.

Anybody used one of these ? --This IMO is what a decent tablet should have been at the start !! especially if one can communicate with a not too small screen to remote computer.

    Cheers

    MobileRead Forums

These sort of questions are best for the biggest ebook reader forums out there, MobiRead.

Honestly, after going through the Nook Simple Touch, Nook 7" & HD+, Lenovo Miix2 8, etc, two realizations.

    1. B&W eink sucks for refresh speed and emagazines and ebooks with illustrations and photos.
    2. Any Big wink reader is far too expensive.

After an extensive search to move beyond the limitations of the past tablets two semesters ago, choice in the end was a used Surface Pro 4 i5 8gb for $250 with keyboard cover on ebay.

With a ciscle / renaisser rechargable pen, I now easily can read and annotate thousands of pages of social sciences texts in a semester with no issues, read all of my ebooks, ecomics, emagazines, edit Office documents, and do EVERYTHING else without a single limitation due to the competing OSs such as iOS or Android OS. (and, the Surface can even run Android emulators...)

    Problem solved - forever!

Today, you ought to be able to get a Surface Pro 5 i5 8Gb for $250 or less on ebay in good condition.
Naturally, feel free to try the Onyx, but I went through eink and hated the fact that I always needed a second device, a real computer, to get everything done. 2 things to charge, maintain, sync, etc. was a total pain with all the prior non-PC tablets, and the Miix2 8" screen was just too small. No issues with the Surface format and size - even magazines display fine full screen for reading.
