I tried using my install CD and I got a message saying it didn't support the version of Windows I was using (Windows 10 32 bit version) so that didn't work at all. Looks like Microsoft and HP dropped the ball on this. And the funny thing is, my old HP DeskJet 932c (which is older than my Photosmart 385) worked just fine in Windows 10.

One observation that may or may not help OP but could serve someone reviewing this thread: After my Win 10 clean install (following upgrade and activation), I added my HP Photosmart C7280 Printer through the "Add a Printer" dialogue. I used the network device name for it (rather than IP address, that may have also worked) but Windows didn't have the driver (HP 7200 Series) on the list, so I opted for the check Windows Update option.

I connected and repopulated the list of drivers BUT there were like 3 different HP driver lists, entitled on the left as "Hewlett-Packard", "Hewlett Packard", and "HP". Point is, I searched through each of the 3 lists until I found the one that had the sought after driver.

I'm not saying one of those has a driver for OP's 385, I'm just saying don't give up too quickly when searching for a driver provided by Windows.

Well I kind of fixed the "issue". I rolled back to Windows 7 and the 385 works fine. I guess the Windows 10 driver doesn't do what the XP/7 driver did. Time for Microsoft to step up and fix this!
Don't hold your breath waiting "Microsoft to step up and fix this!" I seriously doubt they will -- since it is the hardware manufacturer's responsibility to write the drivers, not MS.

However, if you try the upgrade later, consider going to the linked HP page and downloading and running the HP Printer Wizard for Windows -- you never know, it just might work: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/...4/model/443005

I already tried that wizard in Windows 10 with no luck. I might wait till after the first of the year and try to go back to Windows 10 and see what happens.

Good idea. By then, SR1 should be out and MS should have updated their install media to include it.

Snikr, check out this link, HP (Hewlett Packard) Photosmart 385 Drivers Download - Update HP (Hewlett Packard) Software, it has HP Photosmart 385 drivers for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10. This would be worth while to look at if you want to keep using your printer, but you also want Windows 10 on your Desktop. Thanks!
