The specs that I found say it is a 500GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive. You are probably seeing a standard hard drive mounted in a caddy.

    Here's the disassembly video:
Thank you, NavyLCDR! Although I've already had it halfway open; just didn't want to force it, since the hard drive doesn't look like I thought it should . . . I'll take another look see . . .

Which I'd need to get to in order to disable "secure boot". Sooooooooo many things to reckymember!
If it's an EFI device you can also boot from a flash drive by holding shift as you restart.

Your drive is standard SATA, but HP could put an adapter over connector. Just de attach it and put on a new drive
    Aha! Thanks, Andre!

Most HP computers have factory installed diagnostics.

Power on the computer and repetitively click F2.

Run the short DST > report results

If it passes then run long DST.

If either fail then replace the drive.

If both pass then backup any important data and continue troubleshooting.

An additional option for HP computers is creating a flash drive diagnostics.
This does not format the flash drive.
It is added to any bootable flash drive that has free space.
Thank you again, zbook. I'll certainly be looking into the flash drive diagnostics!

Yes it takes you to a windows menu where one of the options is to boot from an EFI device if you have a flash drive plugged in.

I have my daughter's HP 1KU84UA#ABA laptop here for updating.
    ............
Of course, the original problem is that Daughter can't remember her password because it's been a year or more since the computer has been used.

    .....
Guess she has a local account vs M$ account which can be password-reset from website?

Dunno, Steve. But it's a moot question now, since the hard drive was failing. Which has now been replaced.

    Whoop! There it is!!!

She's asking me to put an operating system on the hard drive!

This daughter is one that says, "Don't bother me with the details, just make it work!" She depended on her deceased husband to do all that for her.
