    How to Define an External Drive as a SSD?

    I'm just checking out a new Crucial MX500 SSD drive which will eventually be installed in my desktop PC. I've mounted it in an external SATA caddy for formatting and basic checks which are OK. However, Windows 10 sees it is a hard drive (drive D:) since defrag rather than trim is enabled. How do you define the drive as a SSD to Windows?

    I don't know what's going on but my external MX500 shows as an SSD and needs trimming. I also use it for Macrium backups. Doesn't help though.

    Seems to be commonly seen when using the SSD in an external enclosure....

    Usually, the enclosures are designed in such a way that they will be detected as an external HDD even though you have connected a SSD through it

    Thanks - this does appear to be a 'feature' of Windows which MS can't be bothered to improve. I expect all will be fine when I install the drive in the PC but the feature is bad news for anyone wanting to used a spare SSD in an external drive caddy.

    I think it's more likely to be a feature of the hardware of the caddy, rather than Windows.

    Could be - it's an old one at least 10 years old I had in my spares box.

    Maybe, as it is 0% fragmented, nothing has to be done.

    @Steve C,

    The' Optimise Drives' GUI does not allow you the defrag an SSD or attempt to retrim an HDD. From a Command Prompt (Admin) there are no restrictions on what you can do. I wouldn't advise defragging an SSD, but no harm can come from attempting to retrim an HDD, the worst that can happen is that it says the drive's hardware doesn't support it.

    Defrag D: /retrim

    The Powershell command shown below shows the media type as unspecified for Disk 2 so the problem surely is the old drive caddy I'm using.
