    SSD Upgrade

    Hi

    I have just upgraded my HP Envy laptop from a HDD to the SSD, in particular the Samsung 870 QVO 1TB drive..

    Reading on the web I notice that SSD's have a lifespan and this drive is warranted from Samsung for 3 years or 360TBW..

    Using there software it shows that since I installed it on Friday 4th December it has written 562GB which for just over a week seems a lot..

    I presume this included the initial "clone" of the HDD I did which is 204GB plus through an issue I caused I did a restore from an image so that would be included..

    Should I be concerned how mush data is written to the drive? and have any of you had a short lifespan of the SSD?

    I must say it has made a great difference to this laptop, it boots in 20 seconds now rather than up to a couple of minutes and seems so much smoother :)

    There's perhaps a 1 in 1000 or 10000 chance you should be concerned.

    I write about 5 TB a year to my SSD.

    See how much you write in the next month......which would exclude your cloning.

    I wrote 3 TB in the first few hours I owned my SSD. I deliberately tortured in with writes to see how hot it would get and if it were prone to failure.

    3 years for 360 tb is 120 tb per year which is 10 tb per month....over 300 GB per day. There is very little chance you will approach that over the medium or long term.

    Even if you did, SSDs are likely to continue working well beyond that 360 tb ceiling. The limits exist so Samsung might want to deny your warranty claim if you had a very exceptional case where you wrote more than that amount........unlikely unless you are a commercial database or similar high volume user.

    Thanks for that, I have never had an SSD in a computer so when I start reading stuff and then see how much I have written in just over a week, I worried lol ...

    Will see what it reports by Friday which will be a full week

    You might download and install "Crystal Disk Info". It will give you a lot of info, some of which may be in addition to Samsung software.

    I have 2 SSDs......one for my Windows system and one for data only.

    Here is what Crystal reports right now:

    Windows drive (almost 6 years old): 31 TB writes; about 35000 hours powered on. Shown as 80 percent lifespan. TBW only 72.

    Data drive: almost 2 years old; about 7 TB writes; about 10,500 hours. Still shown as 100 percent lifespan. TBW 400.

    I'm not exactly sure how that 99 percent is calculated...........but it presumably is some formula based on 564 GB written in a very short time.

    I'd guess the 99 percent assumes you will continue to write at the rate of 500 plus gb per week. AKA 2 TB per month or 25 per year. There's virtually no chance you will write 25 between today and this day in 2021.

    Now......if that 99 declined to 96 in the next few weeks, then maybe my eyebrows would raise.

    I will monitor it over the next few weeks to see how it goes, I suspect that like you say it thinks that I will do this all the time and does not take into account 200GB was written in the first 90 mins with the clone.. plus as i say an image restore which bettween them I imagine is the bulk of that 564GB

    It looks like so far between this time last night and now is about 8GB ...

    I suppose it could be anything between 99% and 100% as the decimal point is not shown.

    I would also install Samsung Magician app as it reports Samsung SSD health and can let you know of firmware updates. I use it on all my PCs as I excursively use Samsung SSDs and have not had any issues yet with any of them

    I have installed that :) that is how I got the written data at first :)

    I have just emailed Crystal Disc to see how the 99% is calculated.. maybe it is a slight false reading due to the amount of data written in a short time and will settle down now (I hope lol)

    Here's a point of reference for you.

    My Windows SSD:

    Installed April 2015;

    Total writes May 2015; 322 gb

    June 2015; 593 gb

    May 2019; 17154 gb;

    Nov 2020; 30424; which is about 15 gb writes per day since installation; aka 5.4 tb per year.

    This drive has never been used for data, but houses all programs, with about 40 gb occupied right now.

    I wouldn't draw conclusions based on the first month.
