    Aspire 5610z Start up Problems

Not sure if this is the right place for this question as it doesn't specifically refer to Win10.

I'm trying to get a friend's laptop to work, but there seems to be a significant problem. The unit is an Aspire 5610Z BL50.

When the power button is pressed the power seems to turn it on: the lights come on and the fan spins, but the screen does not show any life. After about ten seconds or so, the fan turns off but the lights stay on. The screen remains blank. Nothing else changes. The only way to turn it off (apart from pulling the plug) is to hold the power button down - i.e. a hard shutdown.

    Any ideas?

    Hi,
It seems Aspire 5610 that probably came with Vista or XP 32 bit OS & 2gb or less Ram with Legacy BIOS & MBR Partitioning scheme.
    Anyway,
Did you ever try to boot it from a Pen drive, Linux or Recovery media ?
To check if any life is there :
As soon as you press the power button, immediately start pressing & releasing F2 key with no gap in between. Does it shows any activity ? Does it takes you to BIOS screen ?
A manual is also there on the product support page & I think it will be good to go through the small Frequently Asked Questions section in that.

    Thanks. ...

Have you a monitor with VGA input that you can connect the laptop to in order to see whether the laptop screen is faulty?

    Thanks for getting back.

    Tried all these.

No difference with external media; no difference pressing F2 (/esc/del/etc); nothing in FAQs of manual that helps; no activity on external monitor.

Very appreciative of the assistance. Likewise with any other help if you can think of other ideas.

Disconnect AC power adapter and battery hold down power button 10 seconds and power on the computer.

Reset RAM modules by taking them out and reconnect them again.

You can also boot the computer with a single RAM module at a time to check if anyone of them is faulty.

Take out the hard drive and power on the computer to see it's causing the boot problem.

Thanks. Tried that while I was dealing with the memory modules. No change.

Is there any way to easily test this for certain? I'm happy to write it off if it is, but, obviously, I don't want to bin it if there's something else it might be that's easily fixable.
