20H2 Clean installs Chipset Drivers not coming from Windows Update

    Greetings All,

Since 20H2 was released I have noticed that Intel chipset drivers and Intel MEI / AMT are no longer installed during the initial Windows Update. I repair machines so clean installs are frequent. It's a bit of a pain. Sometimes I've had to use quite dated drivers.

Anybody else having the same experience ? - Thanks

Yes. I just did a clean install of 20H2 on the wife's Dell Inspiron 17R N7110 "Old I Know" and had to get from DELL the Win 8.1 chipset and the audio drivers for that system so ya! Welcome to Windows 10 compatibility. Everything works just find with the older drivers so no big deal. I build and repair as well, at home not a business. Remember the old days when you had to have CD's for every piece of hardware, Days before broadband.

    Thanks for your confirmation Lance.

Some of the more obscure chipset drivers can take a long time to find. i recently reinstalled a Thinkpad 10-20E3 and it took me a couple of days to find a working NFC chipset driver. It may feel nostalgic but not when I have a customer asking me if it's ready yet every 30 minuites.

I hope chipset drivers return to Windows Update.

Chipset drivers are included with the base Windows install or else the OS wouldn't run (install) on the board. You can also preinstall specific ones for your board at the window where you chose the drive to install Windows. Just use the "load driver" option and and find the location of your drivers. I usually stick the "SATA" drivers on the OS flash drive and search for them there.

Anyway, how "specifically" are you determining what drivers are installed or not.

BTW, I did a clean install of Windows 10 20H2 last week and I didn't install any IME or chipset drivers for my board until after I got the OS sorted and updated. All good here.

Lastly, you'd want to use the drivers specific to your board as opposed to the generic ones for long term use.

Yesterday, I clean installed version 20H2. I disabled auto-updates before connecting to the Internet. No chipset drivers and Intel MEI/AMT have been installed. Windows has been working fine.

Device manager flagging No drivers are installed for this device.
What makes you think your bank manager is a man ? His Beard.

A couple of examples. I stock and sell many HP 250 i3 / i5/ i7 G5's. 2004 clean installs would load all drivers but 20H2 requires drivers for MEI and Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework.

Yesterday I clean installed a Gigabyte B85M-D3H. That required Intel INF installation {SMbus) and Intel Management Engine Interface (PCI Simple Communications Controller)

Most installs since 20H2 have required drivers for SMbus or other where 2004 did not.

I'm quite well versed on installs after 20 years of repair work and yes I understand drivers can be added during installation.

I do thank you for your reply and help.

As I said.... I just clean installed my OS with the 20H2 install "prior" to installing my IME/chipset drivers and the OS installed without issue. But yeah, I did eventually install the IME and chipset drivers. Had no need to install any Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework for my board.

And for the record, I've also been building systems since 1998 and have many posts on my builds here and in the sister forums as well. I'm also "quite well versed on installs after 20 years". The main difference here is I don't resurrect old hardware/software. But yes, doing so requires more driver management.

    Peace 😎

    Thanks for your reply.

My point was, for example.. the HP 250 G5's did not require any additional drivers with 2004 and do now with 20H2.

I fully understood your post. I don’t doubt for a moment your experience and expertise I was merely relaying mine. My apologies if it caused any offence.

    Peace to you too sir.

In 20H2, WU no longer does driver search/lookup. I'm guessing this might be related. Highly recommend French website station-drivers.com as a reliable, virus-free source for driver download.
