Prevent automatic CD tray ejection when drive icon is clicked

    Greetings community!

I am on W10 build 19041.572 and have the following problem: When I click on my CD drive with no disc inserted, the drive opens automatically. I want this behaviour to stop. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Thanks and have a healthy weekend!

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish by clicking on an empty CD drive, but it's normal behavior...when you double-click.

A single-click, or right-click, will not cause the tray to open.

If you want to hide the CD drive completely, right-click on the Start icon, and select Disk Management.

In the lower pane of the Disk Management window (which shows the details of each drive and their partitions) located the CD drive.

Right-click on the CD drive icon and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

    Click on the Remove button.

To "unhide" it, click on the Add button instead of Remove, and assign it a drive letter.

Thanks for your answer. A single click in the Explorer tree view (on the left side) does open the drive tray, though.

That is normal behaviour. It did that in Windows 7 too.

If you click in the navigation pane on an optical drive that has no disk then there's nothing to explore until you put one in. The drive opens so that you can do that. AFAIK there is no way to disable that.

I agree with Bree but will add that on some Notebooks there is no tray but a slot, such as on a Dell Studio 17" I have. There is a key that when pressed will eject the disc but there's a sensor in the player that knows a disc is present and make it happen, key does nothing otherwise.

A single click should not open the drive tray when empty. At least this is the case for my Notebook/Laptop.

I suppose it could be the double click response time/speed which is adjustable in mouse/touchpad properties.

In File Explorer I Right click > Eject, or drive tray button, rather than a double click to open the disc drive.

The double click results in the tray opening and the message box as in post #4, i.e. it cannot find contents to display with no disc

If there is a burnable disc in the tray then the burn dialogue appears with the 2 options.

If there is a disc with content then that shows in the left(Navigation pane) and a single click displays contents. Double click does nothing on an Audio CD, Data disc toggles expanded contents.

This is on Windows 10 ver 2004 build 19041.572

That's irritating, but I will have to accept it.

A single click on the optical drive in This PC in the main File Explorer pane does not eject the drive. A double click is requesting File Explorer to show the contents of the drive. Then if there's no disk the drive will open.

But a single click on the optical drive in the Navigation pane to the left is also telling File Explorer to display the contents - that will eject the drive.

This is in W10 v20H2 19042.610 and in Windows 7. My few machines that still have a CD/DVD drive all have a conventional drive with a tray. Drive with just a slot for the disk may behave differently, but I can't test that.

Nothing happens in my Notebook with the slot drive until there is a disc in it. I don't care for it in normal use as it won't accept the small/3" disc that is used in video cameras and if a CD/DVD gets stuck it's not easy to remove as with a tray.
